Where to stay in Bali

Unlock perks by contacting Alyssa to book your trip.

Do's

Transportation & getting around:

  • Use Gojek or Grab (Bali's version of Uber) for reliable and affordable transportation

  • Consider renting a scooter for short distances, but only if you're experienced

  • Book a trusted local guide for day trips and cultural experiences (we loved our tour biking through Jatiluwih rice fields and hiking Mount Batur)

Accommodation:

  • Consider splitting your stay between different areas (coastal and inland)

  • Treat yourself to at least one night at Capella Ubud, an extraordinary luxury camp with stunning infinity pools and unparalleled service (It was AWESOME, reach out to me to book and add perks!)

  • Villa stays offer great value and privacy, especially around Sanur

Cultural experiences:

  • Visit the John Hardy jewelry workshop in Mambal for sustainable luxury and cultural insight

  • Opt for less touristy water temples like Pura Mengening in Tampaksiring for authentic blessings

  • Explore the La Brisa Market on Sunday

  • Take time to visit artisan villages like Celuk (silversmith) and Mas (woodcarving

  • Visit temples like Goa Gajah

  • See a kecak dance show (yes, it is touristy, but I really liked it)

Nature & adventure:

  • Chase waterfalls: Sekumpul and Kamto Lampo are local favorites

  • Walk the Campuhan Ridge for stunning valley views

  • Visit the Tegalalang Rice Terrace during early morning or late afternoon

  • Bring plenty of bug spray (this is crucial!)

  • Bring rain protection (we had a few stormy days)

Sun Sun Warang

Food & dining:

  • Try the delicious local fruits like rambutan, snakefruit and mangosteen

  • Try local warungs for authentic and affordable Indonesian cuisine (I loved Sun Sun Warung in Ubud)

  • Have brunch at trendy spots like Crate Cafe, Milk and Madu or Kynd Community in Canggu

  • Visit beach clubs like La Brisa or The Lawn for sunset views (I also really wanted to try Times Beach Warung but didn't have time!)

  • Highly recommend a cooking class in the home of a local (reach out to me for more details)

  • Try luwak coffee!

Don'ts

Safety & health:

  • Don't forget travel insurance

  • Don't skip necessary vaccinations and mosquito protection

  • Don't drink tap water

Cultural sensitivity:

  • Don't wear revealing clothing at religious sites

  • Don't touch people's heads (considered sacred in Balinese culture)

Tourist traps:

  • Don't fall for overpriced tourist packages

  • Don't exchange money on the street

  • Don't visit Tirta Empul during peak hours (overcrowded)

  • Don't go out of your way for the art markets, as many of them have the same goods (we found local handmade shops we loved and are happy to share)

  • Don't assume all beaches are suitable for swimming

Important notes

Remember that Bali is experiencing over-tourism in certain areas. Some beaches have trash issues, and traffic can be challenging, especially in popular areas. There are some areas without proper sidewalks, so be extra cautious when walking.

Need to know

Whether you're seeking spiritual enlightenment in Ubud, catching waves in Canggu or simply looking to unwind in luxury, Bali offers endless possibilities. Just remember to respect local customs, stay aware of your surroundings and embrace the island's unique charm with an open mind.
