Curator’s statement
The Cook Islands are perfectly situated halfway between New Zealand and Honolulu – making it a great stand-alone destination in the South Pacific. It can also be a great stopover between the U.S.A., Australia and/or New Zealand. There are 15 dreamy islands and Atolls in the Cook Islands, but the most visited and accessible are Rarotonga and Aitutaki. I highly recommend visiting both. The beaches are beautiful, the locals are delightful and the destination is not overrun by tourists. What more could you ask for during a visit to paradise? Activities abound, but plan some serious downtime to relax, unwind and enjoy the beautiful white-sand beaches and crystal-clear water.

Destination: Rarotonga
Where to Stay:
Little Polynesian Resort, Rarotonga is a small Luxury Hotels of the World property.
A small, boutique and intimate adults-only property set on the beautiful Titikaveka lagoon, this resort exudes barefoot luxury, offering the ultimate relaxing and picturesque getaway. The 14 rooms are all bungalows, contemporary in design with a touch of Polynesian influence. Ten bungalows are beachfront, slightly larger and provide stunning views of the lagoon. The four garden bungalows are situated towards the back of the property, featuring a private courtyard in a serene garden setting.
The beach is perfect for long strolls, snorkeling, SUP and kayaking. Complimentary equipment is available, so there's no need to rent.
The negative-edge pool, framed by coconut palms with the beach and lagoon just steps away, is the ideal place to relax, cool off and take in the mesmerizing view.
The dining experience offered a wide selection of options and quickly became our favorite place to dine on Rarotonga.
What to Do in Rarotonga:
Snorkel with Turtles
Dive into the crystal-clear water and swim among turtles with a local tour operator.
Hike Across the Island
For adventure seekers, hike across the island to reach the Needle. Prepare for steep climbs using tree roots and branches, several stream crossings and slippery terrain if it has rained. The breathtaking views from the top are well worth the effort!
Where to Eat and Drink
Little Polynesian Resort
Poolside with a great view of the lagoon for a leisurely breakfast or a sunset dinner, it’s a must-do. The food is excellent and inspired by local Polynesian flavors with a European twist. Our dinner favorites included the island-style sashimi, Mongolian beef sizzler and a seafood special. The food was very flavorsome, generous portions and of very high quality.
Cococktail
The perfect location for specialty cocktails and tapas. The location provides a great view of the ocean from its vantage point. The cocktail menu is extensive, so you’ll be sure to find a drink you love. Tapas are tasty and offer a variety of sharing plates.
Insider Tip: If you are staying nearby, take advantage of the van shuttle service to/from your hotel.
Charlie's Café & Bar
Come here for a casual lunch and beverage by the lagoon.
Muri Night Market
An open market with vendors serving local meals and desserts. Dine on picnic tables while enjoying Polynesian music and a casual vibe. It's open three nights a week, from at 5pm.
Insider Tip: Go as early as possible as popular vendors sell out quickly.
After a few days in Rarotonga, take the short 45-minute flight via Air Rarotonga to another gem in the chain of the Cook Islands, Aitutaki.
Destination: Aitutaki
Where to Stay:
Pacific Resort Aitutaki is an oasis perfectly positioned on Aitutaki Lagoon, often referred to as the prettiest lagoon in the world – and for good reason. This resort was also voted "Cook Islands' Best Resort" by the World Traveler Awards!
With a casual yet luxurious vibe, the resort never feels crowded. As part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, it is small and intimate, featuring just 29 beachfront bungalows, each perfectly secluded among lush tropical gardens for privacy. We stayed in an Ultimate Beachfront Villa perched high above the lagoon with a private patio and stunning view – the name says it all. Regardless of which bungalow you stay in, you'll experience 5-star amenities, breathtaking views and an outdoor shower. You'll be just steps away from the beach.
The resort’s facilities and warm, friendly staff make the stay extra special, making it the best resort on the island.
What to Do in Aitutaki:
Lagoon Exploration
Aitutaki Lagoon is a must-visit. Hire a private water taxi to fully experience the lagoon. Make sure to stop by Honeymoon Island and One Foot Island for breathtaking scenery and snorkel among the giant Trevally fish.
Ootu Beach Visit
Take advantage of the complimentary bikes to ride to Ootu Beach. Enjoy a refreshing swim and a drink with an incredible view at the Blue Lagoon Restaurant.
Kiteboarding
Honeymoon Island offers ideal conditions for kiteboarding, with its warm, clear and shallow waters making it perfect for beginners.
Whale Watching
If you're visiting between July and October, don't miss the chance to join Wet & Wild Aitutaki for a boat trip to see and swim with humpback whales.
E-Bike Adventure
Rent an e-bike to explore the entire island at your own pace, discovering hidden gems and enjoying the beautiful landscapes.
Where to Eat and Drink
Rapae Bay Restaurant
Located onsite at the Pacific Resort, this restaurant is renowned for its exceptional location, top-notch customer service and delicious cuisine. It's no surprise it was voted "Cook Islands Best Restaurant" by the World Culinary Awards. The complimentary breakfast offers a range of continental and cooked options, barista coffees and fresh fruit smoothies. Enjoy an early dinner as the sun sets, cocktail in hand, while soaking in the stunning views. Our favorite dishes included the eggs benedict, nightly dinner specials and the chocolate lava cake for dessert.
This café features a charming garden setting, which serves breakfast and lunch, along with some of the best coffee on the island.
Great 'Watering Holes'
The Boat Shed Bar & Grill has a nice outdoor dining area, and the Blue Lagoon Restaurant offers an unbeatable view right on the lagoon. Although we didn't dine at these establishments, they also serve food.
