A Weekend at Canada's "Castle on the Coast"
Curator’s statement

In April of 2024, during a visit to Vancouver Island, I had the opportunity to stay at the Fairmont Empress, known as Canada's "Castle on the Coast." Situated right on the harbor and surrounded by hundreds of blooming tulips, this hotel is idyllic, to say the least. Every piece of the experience was so thoughtfully curated, including an exceptionally friendly staff, a world-class spa and even an exclusive Empress-inspired gin. If you're visiting Victoria, a stay at the Empress is a must!

While your time at the Fairmont Empress will be an experience all its own, there is opportunity for adventure all around the hotel. A short walk south past the neighboring Royal BC Museum — make sure to stop by to see the latest exhibition — will bring you to Beacon Hill Park, a lush oasis with beautiful floral displays, tranquil ponds and wandering peacocks.

After making your way through the park (bonus points if you spot The Moss Lady) take a walk along the water at Spiral Beach. If you’re still craving time with nature, make your way to Fisherman’s Wharf and grab a spot on an Eagle Wing tour. Led by local experts, you’ll have the chance to see wildlife including whales, sea lions, and marine birds.

Just north of the hotel, venture a few blocks up Government Street to find yourself in Chinatown. Make sure to walk through Fan Tan Alley (the narrowest commercial street in North America) before stopping by Hey Happy for a caffeine fix. For those on the lookout for their next read, head to Munro’s Books, founded by authors and housed in the Royal Bank Building.

Victoria has no shortage of culinary experiences, including the shared menu at Wind Cries Mary, and burritos at Boom Town. However, if you’d like some local expertise, join A Taste of Victoria Food Tour, including six tastings and a chance to meet local chefs. Whether exploring the great outdoors or delving into the vibrant urban culture, Vancouver Island offers a variety of experiences for every traveler.
