Curator’s statement
There’s something effortlessly elegant about the Kempinski Hotel Cancun. My teenage daughter and I spent a sun-drenched weekend here in February 2025, and from start to finish, it was pure bliss. Just 25 minutes from the airport in the Hotel Zone, this resort is an ideal quick getaway for families with older teens and young adults.

The Vibe: Laid-back elegance

Coffee and cocktail lounge
Kempinski Cancun is all about sophisticated relaxation with impeccable service. It’s not a party-centric resort, nor does it cater to young children with structured activities. Instead, it strikes the perfect balance for those seeking luxury, comfort and independence.
Formerly the Ritz-Carlton, the hotel has undergone a stunning multi-million-dollar renovation. Thoughtful details — like extended breakfast hours, non-slip poolside tiles, generous bathroom counter space and an abundance of beach towels — make staying here feel seamless and indulgent.
Rooms & amenities

Balcony view
Each of the 363 rooms boasts views of Cancún’s legendary turquoise waters and pristine beaches, with most offering private terraces. Sipping my morning coffee on the balcony and drifting off to sleep listening to the rhythmic crash of ocean waves were highlights of our stay — simple pleasures that never lose their magic.
The rooms are spacious and well-appointed, and about a third feature two double beds, making them ideal for families or groups of three to four who prefer to stay together.

Chill time
Getting there
Book your airport transfer in advance with a trusted company like eTransfer or Happy Shuttle, which typically charge $25 to $35 per person to the Hotel Zone. Avoid the overpriced taxi offers from drivers swarming the arrivals area. Thinking about Uber? While it’s great for getting around Cancun, it's not a convenient option for airport pickups — more on that below.
Things to do

Pool
With two pools and direct beach access, the resort is perfect for teens and young adults who want the freedom to explore while parents relax, knowing the property is safe. A well-equipped gym and pickleball courts add to the appeal.
Dining

Breakfast buffet
Breakfast at the Kempinski is a standout experience, with fresh, delicious options and ocean views. Even better, breakfast runs until 11:30 am on weekdays and 1 pm. on Sundays — ideal for both early risers and late sleepers. For evenings, we loved D Lounge on the ground floor, where we enjoyed incredible sushi, expertly crafted cocktails and live music that wraps up respectfully by 11 pm. Throughout the day, poolside dining and sunset cocktails overlooking the ocean kept us happily satiated.
Service
The staff is warm, welcoming and highly attentive. Many team members have been with the hotel since its original opening in 1993, adding a sense of familiarity and excellence to the experience.
The Club Lounge

The Club Lounge
If there was one thing I’d change about our trip, it would be opting for access to The Club Lounge. Reserved for guests 16 and older, it offers all-day coffee, light bites and cocktails, plus floor-to-ceiling windows with breathtaking sunset views. It’s an especially convenient and economical choice for families or groups with different meal schedules, or for those who need a quiet spot to work or unwind.
Eat like a local in downtown Cancun

Mar Di Vino restaurant in downtown Cancun
The Hotel Zone’s restaurants can be hit-or-miss, with steep prices and underwhelming food. Instead, venture to Avenida Nader in downtown Cancun, a rising hotspot for stylish eateries, vibrant street art and a relaxed, local vibe. Check out Mar Di Vino, Tigre and Toro or Socio Naiz for flatbread pizzas, fresh fish carpaccios and well-priced margaritas.
Great for:
Long-weekend sunseekers looking for direct beach access
Families with teens and young adults
Groups seeking rooms for four people or adjoining rooms
Travelers seeking a refined, laid-back atmosphere
A weekend at the Kempinski Cancun is the perfect blend of relaxation and luxury, making it a destination worth returning to — again and again.

Need to know
Uber Availability
Uber has been operating in Cancun since 2023 and is a safe, affordable option within the city and the Hotel Zone. However, Cancun’s taxi unions have successfully banned Uber from airport pickups. If you plan to use Uber upon arrival, you’ll need to leave airport grounds to meet your driver. Many travelers walk to the main highway (Carretera Cancun - Chetumal) or head to a nearby OXXO convenience store or small shopping plaza for pickup.
For departures, Uber is a hassle-free and cost-effective way to get back to the airport.
