Hidden Gem: Ilulissat, Greenland
Curator’s statement

Nearly 200 miles inside the Arctic Circle lies the charming city of Ilulissat. Under the summer’s midnight sun, you will find the infamous Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I visited recently to learn more about my Danish roots and would highly recommend it to any clients looking for a unique adventure with incredible views.

Ilulissat is tucked away in the heart of Disko Bay along the Western Coast of Greenland. This hidden gem is perfect for a few days off the grid because it features so many outdoor activities. While there are plenty of gorgeous scenic hikes to be had, you will want to make your way to the abandoned Sermermiut settlement that dates back over 4,000 years. Along the way, you will see aerial views of the stunning iceberg-laden bay. If you are feeling even more adventurous, consider other excursion opportunities like kayaking and dog sledding.

You will not want to miss a midnight sun cruise through the fjord, even if it is past your bedtime. Sailing among the icebergs is even more magical in the middle of the night. The captain stopped close to the active glacier so everyone could see it in action with a traditional Greenlandic welcome drink. If a daytime sailing fits your needs better, I recommend venturing to Eqi Glacier. Either way, you will want to pack a winter coat and gloves because it gets chilly on the water.

The city is one of Greenland's largest with around 4,500 residents. It features numerous souvenir shops, eateries and a museum dedicated to the polar explorer, Knud Rasmussen (no relation). The world’s northernmost 4-star hotel, Hotel Arctic, is within walking distance of downtown. The property features an upscale Greenlandic design, seasonal dining options and superior hospitality.

Need to know

I recommend Ilulissat to my clients looking for an unforgettable getaway off-the-beaten-path. The scenery is gorgeous and there is something for everyone. The locals are incredibly welcoming and excited to share their home with visitors. Reach out and let me help you plan your Greenland vacation.
