After flying into Naples, meet a pre-scheduled car service driver for a short ride to Sorrento.
Along the way, enjoy welcoming seaside views while dreaming of the adventures ahead as you embark on your own Sorrento to Rome journey.
The Hilton Sorrento Palace provides grand five-star accommodations, serving as a central hub for exploring the captivating sights of the Amalfi Coast. Embark on a voyage of discovery, traversing the picturesque port cities of Sorrento, Positano and Capri, where vibrant colors mingle with charming architecture amidst the bluest of crystal seas.
My list of favorite must-sees is long, but here are a few of my recs to pique your interest.
Sorrento
Basilica di San Filippo e San Giacomo or the Duomo is nestled atop many steps. The Sorrento Cathedral was built in the 15th century and features a beautiful interior and stunning views of the Bay of Naples. Start your day with a workout, climbing the cascading stone steps to this tiny hilltop church just a few steps away from the Hilton Sorrento Palace. My most vivid memory about this church is that I mistakenly left a gift I bought for my young son, a handcrafted chess board purchased at a nearby artisan shop. It was evening and too late to go back up that night, so I journeyed back up the next morning and was so happy to find it still there. Playing a game of chess on it today brings back happy memories of my Sorrento to Rome vacation.
Capri & Anacapri
From Sorrento, board an express ferry to the beautiful island of Capri. Once on Capri, you will shuttle around the island learning about its rich history as you travel to the natural caves of the Blue Grotto. Next up is the charming town of Anacapri, where you will have free time to shop, catch a cup of coffee and explore Mount Salaro via chairlift before heading back to Sorrento for the evening.
Positano & Amalfi
Depart the Sorrento marina on a scenic boat trip for Positano and Amalfi, where you will visit each town for local shopping and take a refreshing swim before a memorable champagne lunch. Top off the tour with a sip of a Southern Italy's favorite drink — limoncello — before sailing back to Sorrento along the spectacular Amalfi Coast. Be sure to wear comfy shoes so you are able to climb the steep Positano hillside to have lunch overlooking the breathtaking coast. This was a cherished memory of mine during my Sorrento to Rome adventure.
Pompeii
Pompeii is one of my absolute favorite places to explore. If history and architecture amaze you as they do me, visiting the ancient city of Pompeii is a must-see. Step back in time and walk in the footsteps of the past and explore the remarkably preserved ruins in this once-thriving Roman City. Witness the remnants of daily life frozen in time, offering a glimpse into the splendor and tragedy of Pompeii. The archaeological treasures will leave you in awe of the rich and diverse history that shaped this region. Visit and learn about the deep history of this extraordinary city, where time stands still after the devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D.
Rome
The Sorrento to Rome voyage concludes in the Eternal City, where millennia of history and culture converge. While in Rome, I stayed at the Rome Cavalieri, a Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Splurge on a concierge level room and enjoy all-day foodie refreshments along with a mesmerizing panoramic view of the Vatican. This luxurious hotel boasts three-star Michelin dining, a park, pools, spa, a myriad of artwork and five-star service. Explore iconic landmarks such as the Colosseum, Vatican City and the Roman Forum, each bearing witness to the grandeur of the Roman Empire. Immerse yourself in the vibrant streets and piazzas, where the past seamlessly intertwines with the present. Rome offers a delightful blend of shopping, dining and cultural experiences.
Rome is a paradise for fashion enthusiasts and shopaholics alike. From high-end designer boutiques to quaint local shops, the city offers a diverse range of shopping experiences. Via dei Condotti, located near the Spanish Steps, is famous for its luxury brands and designer stores. For a more unique and bohemian shopping experience, head to the trendy neighborhood of Monti, known for its vintage stores, artisan shops and stylish boutiques.
Rome is a gastronomic haven, offering a tantalizing array of culinary delights. Indulge in authentic Italian cuisine as you savor traditional dishes like pasta carbonara, cacio e pepe, and suppli (fried rice balls). Trastevere, a charming neighborhood known for its narrow streets and lively atmosphere, is a great place to experience the local food scene. Explore the Testaccio district, famous for its Roman cuisine and vibrant food markets. Additionally, make certain to try the world-famous gelato, as Rome is home to some of the best gelaterias in Italy.
The Vatican
A trip to Rome would be incomplete without a visit to the Vatican City, the smallest independent state in the world and the spiritual center of Catholicism. Explore the magnificent St. Peter's Basilica, an architectural masterpiece adorned with priceless artworks, including the breathtaking frescoes of the Sistine Chapel, painted by Michelangelo himself. Don't forget to visit the Vatican Museums, which house a vast collection of art and historical treasures, including the iconic Raphael Rooms and the Gallery of Maps.
