Curator’s statement
Soldeu is merely 2.5 hours away from Barcelona. It is a mere two minute walk to the Gondola that takes you up to all the skiing domains. You can rent your skis and leave them in lockers and simply walk to your spa or apres-ski. It is a very local destination with mostly French and Spanish visitors. It boasts the Sport Hotel Hermitage & Spa, which has a very contemporary design, beautiful spa and all with the best views of the slopes.

We stayed at Xalet Montana, which is linked to Hotel Naudi across the road. They are both charming boutique hotels. One is more cozy and rustic (Xalet Montana) and the other is more contemporary (Naudi). The Hotel Naudi has an upscale restaurant for both lunch and dinner that includes Spanish rices, meats and even a small fondue starter of melted Morbier cheese.

We visited Sport Hotel Hermitage & Spa and the service, design and the food were incredible. We had amazing sushi, especially the tuna was extremely high quality. They have a separate sushi bar that has tuna tasting events. The spa is also 50,000 sq ft, with various pools, saunas and hammams. This is included in the room rate if you stay at Sport Hotel or the Village hotel next door.

I am an avid skier and enjoy going on various pistes of varying levels. This was a very beginner-friendly domain as the reds felt like blues and were very wide. There were some steeper reds, but they got more even quite quickly. I am comparing it to my latest skiing in Mammoth, and the pistes there were consistently steeper. My other issue is that the chairlifts are very long and you spend a lot of time on them. The food on the slopes is pretty basic, including fries and nachos, but there are a couple of restaurants. We went to the Raco, which is sponsored by Bulthaup, and ate really good Argentinian and Uruguayan beef with the whole view of the slopes beneath us.

Overall, worth going as it is so convenient. Make sure you go in February and March when the snow is there, as the season has been getting shorter due to climate change. There is no guarantee that you will get snow on the slopes in December or even January.
Need to know
There are only a few restaurants available in the Soldeu town, but you can always drive to nearby towns like El Tarter or Pas de La Casa. Although, they are less luxurious areas of the valley and may be a little bit more crowded. I failed to try the Italian restaurant that is also part of the Sport Hotel, namely La Tofana, and next time I would definitely book to go to Koy, the sushi bar itself. There is also a great tapas bar that we went to called Taverna de la Iaia, which is good value. Also, there is no Apres-Ski culture so it is a lot more family-friendly.
