Curator’s statement
In October 2024, my spouse and I embarked on our honeymoon to Indonesia. After a blissful week in Bali, we hopped on a short 45-minute flight to Komodo Airport in Lubuan Bajo, located on the captivating island of East Nusa Tenggara. Our stay at AYANA Komodo Waecicu Beach for four enchanting nights was nothing short of extraordinary. From impeccable service to luxurious accommodations, captivating tours, and top-notch facilities, every aspect exceeded our expectations. Undoubtedly a hidden gem, this destination is a must-add to any Bali itinerary.

While we loved Bali, what a stark contrast it was to arrive in the quaint fishing village of Lubuan Bajo after the bustling chaos of Ubud. Navigating through the traffic in Bali to reach the airport was a daunting task, it was nearly three hours of bumper-to-bumper traffic. However, upon arrival at Komodo Airport, our transition was swift. Within minutes, we retrieved our bags, located our prearranged driver, and embarked on a brief 10-minute journey to Ayana Komodo Waecicu Beach.
Upon arrival at the main lobby, perched on the 11th floor, we were immediately captivated by the vast expanse of the beach visible through floor to ceiling windows. Stretching as far as the eye could see, the panoramic view revealed azure waters dotted with scattered islands, an awe-inspiring sight indeed.
Every room at Ayana Komodo offers an unparalleled ocean view, while the pool itself overlooks the Flores Sea. The hotel boasts a rooftop bar where we indulged in exceptional drinks amidst breathtaking vistas. One of the hotel's most distinctive features is its lengthy dock adorned with comfortable lounge chairs and a bar. Here, we spent many days, basking in the sun, exploring the vibrant underwater world through snorkeling, savoring refreshing beverages, and witnessing the enchanting sunsets. We also made use of the well-equipped gym facilities, ensuring a well-rounded and fulfilling stay.
We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the onsite dining options. The breakfast buffet was particularly impressive, offering an extensive array of choices. Throughout our stay, we predominantly dined at the hotel, with RINCA being a favorite spot. We especially relished their delicious fish dishes.
What To Do:
Discover Coral Reefs and Komodo Dragons with Island Hopping Tour: We had the option of several island hopping tours, but we decided on the Full Day Komodo Tour. Our day began early at 7:30 in the morning, meeting the captain at the hotel dock - so easy! Our journey commenced towards Padar Island, along the hour long journey we were fortunate to spot playful baby dolphins from the boat.
Our first destination was Palau Padar, where we embarked on a steep but ‘well-worth it’ hike. We ascended the hill for about 20 minutes, and were rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views from the top. Following our hike, we got back on the boat and made our way to Pink Beach, renowned for its coral reefs and distinctive pink-hued sands. We spent time snorkeling in the vibrant coral reef, full of colorful fish. The experience was truly unforgettable.
Our final destination was Komodo Island, where every visitor is assigned a local guide for the duration of their stay. I was initially apprehensive about encountering Komodo dragons up close, but found that most of them, with the exception of a baby, were resting under shaded areas to find shelter from the hot afternoon sun. The presence of our guide also made me feel a lot better! We spent 20-minutes near the beach before venturing inland on a loop. Witnessing five Komodo dragons during our time there was a memory we will never forget.
Experience Underwater Marvels with Glass Bottom Boat Tour: I also recommend the Ayana Komodo Waecicu Beach glass bottom boat tour that allows you to see the underwater world without getting wet! You can glide over coral reefs and colorful fish habitats, marveling at the mesmerizing marine ecosystem beneath you through the crystal-clear glass bottom.
Adventure on the Water with Paddleboarding and Kayaking: Good news, paddleboards and kayaks are available to rent at the hotel! The water in front of the hotel is very calm so it’s a perfect place to explore on a paddleboard and/or kayak, soaking in the stunning coastal views.
Seclusion and Serenity at the Private Island: The hotel owns a private island situated a few minutes from the main property by boat. A boat departs at multiple intervals throughout the day to ferry guests there. Here, you can fully immerse oneself in island life.
Relax at the Pool: The pool is so lovely and includes a swim up bar and many cabanas for visitors to use. We enjoyed some refreshing cocktails and panoramic ocean views.
Savor Sunset Magic on a Dinner Cruise: The hotel also offers a Sunset Dinner Cruise, where visitors can enjoy a gourmet meal while enjoying the breathtaking sunset views.
