A Glimpse into the Casino's History

The Catalina Island Casino stands as the island's most iconic landmark. This round, Art Deco masterpiece gracefully rises against the backdrop of the sea. It gleams brilliantly under the warm daytime sun and casts a romantic glow across the harbor at night. Commissioned and brought to life by none other than William Wrigley, Jr., it opened its doors on May 29, 1929, just in time to kick off the summer season. But, despite its name, the Catalina Island Casino is not a gambling den but rather a "place of entertainment."

During the 1930s and 1940s, the Catalina Casino was the ultimate hotspot for Big Bands of the era. Guests would arrive by steamship to dance the night away on the expansive parquet floor. Legendary musicians like Glenn Miller, Harry James, Kay Kyser, and many others left their musical mark within these walls. The Catalina Casino Ballroom, spanning a vast 20,000 square feet, proudly claims the title of the world's largest circular ballroom without any interior support pillars. Its most significant moment was when 6,200 dancers swayed to Kay Kyser's melodies on May 8, 1940. Live broadcasts from the Casino were a regular feature on CBS radio from the 1930s to the 1950s. Countless iconic events have graced its stage, but what truly sets it apart is the unique atmosphere you'll experience when you attend an event here.

Stepping inside the Avalon Theatre, you're greeted by breathtaking murals that pay homage to the island's natural beauty and early California life. This was one of the first movie houses constructed for "talkies," marking a significant milestone in the entertainment industry. Back in the 1920s and 1930s, audience comfort was paramount, with each theater seat featuring a hidden hat shelf—a nod to the fashion sensibilities of the time.

During World War II, Catalina Island transformed into a military base as part of the war effort. Various branches of the military used it for different purposes, and after the war, surplus materials were tucked away within the Casino's interior walls, including essential emergency supplies ready for deployment if needed.

Unearthly Encounters

The Catalina Island Casino is more than just its timeless beauty and rich history; it holds secrets beyond what meets the eye. As you step into this iconic landmark, you might not only be greeted by its grandeur but also by the whispers of restless spirits from the past.

The ladies' restroom has been a significant hotspot for paranormal activity, with documented reports of unsettling events. Witnesses have described encounters with a disembodied voice that sternly commands, "Get Out," leaving them puzzled and unnerved. There's another account involving a visiter who heard a woman sobbing in the restroom. Could this be the same spirit? Concerned, she approached the source of distress, only to find the restroom completely empty.

A dapper gentleman, dressed in a tuxedo, has been the subject of persistent rumors, with reported sightings on the ballroom's dance floor. Could this spectral figure be none other than William Popham himself? William, attending the dance solo, carried the weight of a heavy heart, having faced the rejection of his beloved. As the haunting melodies of the dance orchestra filled the air, evoking memories of his lost love, the 24-year-old tragically leaped to his death from the balcony.

Let's not overlook the tale of a man in vintage attire, evoking the aura of World War II or the early 1920s, who reportedly strolled right through a solid wall, creating an inexplicable link between the lobby and the theater. There are also accounts of a middle-aged man, seemingly caught in a time warp from the 1950s, making sudden appearances in an unresponsive state before mysteriously vanishing.

One of the most enduring tales centers around a spectral woman, elegantly draped in a white robe with an ethereal, almost translucent presence. She's known to frequent the mezzanine level of the building, gently inquiring of those who cross her path, "Have you seen my husband?" before vanishing mysteriously into thin air.

As you explore the Catalina Island Casino, you'll step back in time to an era of glamor and entertainment, all while being surrounded by breathtaking Art Deco design and the echoes of bygone musical performances. Whether you're drawn by its history, architecture or the possibility of encountering something otherworldly, the Catalina Island Casino promises an unforgettable visit on this enchanting island. So, when you're planning your next vacation, consider adding this historic and haunted gem to your list of must-visit destinations.
