Moana Surfrider: A Classic Surf Hotel
Curator’s statement

The Moana Surfrider is a classic surf hotel with a Hawaiian Plantation feel, without the high-rise and hustle of many other properties in the area. The location cannot be beat for Waikiki, walk to the sand from breakfast.

The Surfrider is undergoing a renovation as of early 2025, which seemed to be needed. The property is gorgeous, a courtyard set up facing the beach with an amazing Banyan tree in the center. The lobby and lounge are expansive, and the porch facing the water with rocking chairs is the prime spot.

Rooms are ample, with large bathrooms. I recommend getting a balcony room. The breakfast buffet is large and the service every morning was great. You can surf right out front, walk to the many shops right out the door and stroll down the boardwalk.

The Diamond hike is popular, but you must reserve in advance. Parking is tough there, so we rented bikes and rode over to the trailhead. You can also take a rideshare easily. The Zoo and Aquarium are walking distance as well, and great for little ones. A luau or magic show are also fun for families.

I would ask for a renovated room when booking since the project is not yet complete. The older rooms are a bit tired. Also, be prepared for some waiting at check-in or the concierge (or even the elevator) during peak times.

Although there is a pool, it is small and chairs get taken first thing in the morning. This is more of a beach destination.

Need to know

The Surfrider is ideal if you want a smaller resort in Waikiki right on the beach. It is surrounded by high-rises that don't have the same feel. The blend of Victorian architecture and modern touches is ideal.
