Day 1: Tokyo Awaits!

Welcome to the dazzling metropolis of Tokyo! After a smooth train ride or taxi from Haneda Airport (HND), you'll arrive at your hotel. Depending on where you arrive from, it’s most likely late afternoon. Take this time to explore around your hotel. Either grab a quick bite nearby or enjoy a meal at the hotel. Settle in and focus on getting adjusted to the new timezone.

Day 2: Unveiling Tokyo's Treasures

Savor a delicious breakfast at the hotel before diving headfirst into the captivating energy of Tokyo. This is what I consider a great first day introduction to Tokyo. It can mostly be done on foot and allows you to see some of the best of Tokyo!

Brace yourself for the electrifying Shibuya Crossing, the world's busiest intersection, a must-do for any visitor. Next, find serenity at the Meiji Shrine, nestled amid the enchanting Yoyogi Park, where you can witness the captivating spectacle of cherry blossoms in bloom (depending on the season). Next up, indulge in a luxurious shopping spree or window shopping stroll on Omotesando Street, the Champs-Élysées of Tokyo. Omotesando's tree-lined avenue, located in Shibuya, is filled with wonderful shops, funky cafes, including various animal cafes, and great restaurants. If you’re looking to check out an animal cafe like Capybara Cafe or Harry Harajuku Terrace, I recommend making a reservation. Finally, to cap off your Tokyo day one and for a unique cultural experience, I recommend a visit to the Nezu Museum, housing a collection of exquisite Japanese art.

In the evening, immerse yourself in the rich tradition of Kabuki theater. Witness the captivating dance, drama and elaborate costumes unfold at the renowned Kabuki-za Theater. They sell one act tickets, which is a great option as the full show can be extremely long, especially if you don’t understand what is going on. I highly recommend purchasing an English guide to enhance your experience and learn more about what you are watching. After the show, embark on a culinary adventure at Ginza Koju, a traditional Kaiseki restaurant revered for its meticulous multi-course meals. While it might not be for everyone's palate due to its focus on traditional flavors and textures, it's an unforgettable experience for those seeking an authentic taste of Japan. To end the day on a bubbly note, head to the High Five Bar in Ginza, a trendy spot known for its innovative cocktails. Don't worry about reservations; this lively bar operates on a first-come, first-served basis.

Day 3: Unveiling the Heart of Old Tokyo & a Touch of Zen

After a delightful breakfast, prepare to be transported to a different era. Your day begins with a unique cultural immersion experience — a Kimono Tea Ceremony tour. Slip into a beautiful kimono, a symbol of Japanese grace, and learn the intricate art of the tea ceremony, a practice steeped in tradition and tranquility.

Next, we delve into the vibrant district of Asakusa, the beating heart of Old Tokyo. Marvel at the majestic Senso-ji Temple, Tokyo's oldest temple, and wander through the bustling Nakamise-dori shopping street, lined with stalls overflowing with local crafts and souvenirs. Seek serenity at Ueno Park, a sprawling oasis offering museums, a zoo and a picturesque pond. For the adventurous foodie, explore Ameya-Yokocho market, a labyrinthine maze packed with fresh produce, unique street food and hidden treasures.

If you're visiting during cherry blossom season, don't miss the Bokutei Sakura-matsuri Festival, a vibrant celebration along the scenic Sumida River.

Tonight, escape the ordinary with a dinner reservation at L'écrin Ginza, a sophisticated French restaurant nestled in the heart of Ginza. Dress up for an evening of Parisian chic and savor exquisite French cuisine prepared with the freshest Japanese ingredients. Prepare to be dazzled by the impeccable service and breathtaking views of the Tokyo skyline.

Day 4: A Luxurious Escape to Hakone

After a delicious breakfast, bid farewell to Tokyo and embark on a scenic journey to Hakone, a mountainous retreat renowned for its natural beauty and rejuvenating hot springs (onsens). A comfortable bullet train whisks you away from the bustling metropolis, arriving at Odawara Station in under an hour.

Check into your ryokan — a traditional Japanese inn, offering a unique blend of cultural immersion, relaxation and exceptional hospitality that makes it a truly special experience for many. Unwind and rejuvenate in the steaming natural hot springs, a deeply ingrained part of Japanese culture known for its therapeutic benefits. Let the soothing waters melt away your travel fatigue as you soak in the breathtaking mountain views. This is one of your slower days of your 14-day Japan Itinerary. Enjoy it!

Day 5: Exploring the Wonders of Hakone

Fuel up for a day of exploration with a delicious Japanese breakfast at your ryokan. Embark on a captivating adventure through Hakone, utilizing the convenient Hakone Free Pass.

The Hakone Loop:

Hakone Tozan Cable Car: Ascend the slopes of Mount Hakone in a charming cable car, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Hakone Ropeway: Glide over volcanic valleys and witness the majestic Mount Fuji (weather permitting) on the Hakone Ropeway. A stop at Owakudani allows you to witness the otherworldly sight of steaming volcanic vents and try the local delicacy — black eggs, cooked in the sulfurous hot springs.

Lake Ashi Boat: Take a scenic cruise on Lake Ashi, Hakone's iconic crater lake. Choose your final stop based on your preferences:

Hakone-machi Port: Explore the Hakone Open-Air Museum or enjoy a nature walk in Hakone Gora Park.

Moto-Hakone Port: Visit the serene Hakone Shrine, a beautiful Shinto shrine nestled amid the mountains.

Hakone Tozan Bus: Complete the loop by hopping on a bus back to Gora Station, where your journey began.

After a busy day exploring Hakone, enjoy your private onsen back at the hotel and the traditional Japanese dinner waiting for you.

Day 6: En Route to Kyoto, the City of a Thousand Temples

After a delightful breakfast at your ryokan, bid farewell to Hakone and journey to Kyoto, the cultural heart of Japan. A bullet train ride whisks you away, with a transfer in Nagoya, depending on your chosen route to Kyoto Station.

After checking into your hotel and freshening up, take a leisurely stroll along the Philosopher's Path, a charming pedestrian walkway lined with cherry blossom trees (in season). This scenic path offers a glimpse into the quiet beauty of Kyoto and a perfect introduction to the city's serene atmosphere. For dinner, I recommend checking out Pontocho Alley. It’s a popular and cute street with lots of restaurant and bar options. Just expect to have a wait time if you don’t make a reservation ahead of time.

Day 7: Unveiling Kyoto's Enchanting Temples and Gion District

Kyoto awaits with its treasure trove of temples, shrines and cultural experiences.

Get an early start — like very early, plan on arriving around 7-7:30am to beat the crowds — journey to the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, a captivating natural wonder. Stroll along the serene paths lined with towering bamboo stalks, creating a magical and almost ethereal atmosphere. Immerse yourself in the tranquility and capture breathtaking photos amid the emerald green landscape. After the bamboo grove, you can check out the Arashiyama Monkey Grove and make sure to explore the Tenryuji Temple, a serene Zen temple with beautiful gardens. For a unique experience, enjoy a traditional Japanese boat ride on the Hozugawa River, offering stunning views of the Arashiyama bamboo grove.

After Arashiyama, get ready for your ticketed Geisha Traditional Performance. Witnessing a geisha performance is a unique opportunity to experience a glimpse into Kyoto's rich cultural heritage. Prepare to be captivated by the beauty, grace and artistry of these highly skilled performers. Showtimes vary and advance ticket purchase is highly recommended. You can even join in a traditional tea ceremony prior to the show start. Expect a captivating display of Japanese performing arts. Traditional Japanese dances known as Odori are a highlight. These graceful and intricate dances often involve beautiful kimonos, flowing movements, and fans as props.

As dusk settles, immerse yourself in the enchanting Gion District, the heart of Kyoto's geisha culture. Wander along the narrow streets lined with traditional wooden buildings, tea houses and restaurants. Keep your eyes peeled for a chance to catch a glimpse of a geisha in her elaborate kimono.

Tonight, savor a delectable meal in Gion. Choose from a variety of traditional Japanese restaurants or opt for a more contemporary establishment. Be sure to try some local specialties like Kyo-yasai (seasonal Kyoto vegetables) or obanzai (small side dishes).

Day 8: Exploring Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Nara

Another recommended early start, the Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, renowned for its thousands of vermilion torii gates winding up Mount Inari, is a must-visit. Walk through the seemingly endless tunnel of gates, each one donated by a business for good fortune. Enjoy the scenic, yet challenging hike and the vibrant atmosphere at this unique Shinto shrine.

Next, head to the awe-inspiring Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji). This majestic temple, adorned with gold leaf, shimmers on the glistening surface of Kyomizu Pond. Admire the exquisite reflection of the pavilion and the surrounding gardens, a testament to the beauty of Japanese Zen design. Admire the meticulous landscaping, koi ponds and the harmonious blend of nature and architecture.

In the afternoon, step back in time at Nijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the lavishly decorated chambers and imagine the life of a shogun (feudal lord). Marvel at the nightingale floors designed to create a warning sound when stepped upon.

Kick off your evening with a Sake Tour! Kyoto boasts a rich sake brewing history dating back centuries. A sake tour allows you to delve deeper into this fascinating tradition, discover the unique characteristics of Kyoto sake and offers a chance to venture beyond the typical tourist spots and experience a more authentic side of Kyoto. These tours often take you to smaller, family-owned breweries that are not on the usual tourist map. Here, you'll meet passionate brewers who are dedicated to preserving this time-honored craft.

Day 9: A Day Trip to Nara: Deer, Temples and History

Day 9 of your 14-day Japan Itinerary offers a chance to slow down a bit, unwind and delve deeper into Japan’s natural beauty.

After a slow final morning in Kyoto, your private driver whisks you from Kyoto to Nara. As you glide through the outskirts of Kyoto, admire the serene countryside landscapes. Your driver might point out interesting landmarks or share insights into Japanese culture, making the journey itself an educational experience. Arriving at Nara Park, this sprawling expanse is home to Kasuga Grand Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and of course, the city's most famous residents — the friendly sika deer. Immediately you'll be greeted by the sight of these gentle creatures roaming freely. Purchase some shika-senbei (deer crackers) from a nearby vendor, and watch as the deer approach you curiously, gently nudging your hand for a treat. Immerse yourself in the tranquility of Todai-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site housing the colossal bronze statue of Buddha Vairocana — a sight that leaves you awestruck. After a few enchanting hours in Nara Park, relax in your car as you head to Osaka, where your driver will drop you at your hotel. This delightful day trip leaves you with memories of Nara's charm and ready for your next stop in Osaka.

This evening, consider dipping your toes into Osaka’s famous foodie scene and joining a famous Osaka Foodie Tour to discover how the locals eat and drink. Your tour guide will help you navigate the izakayas and backstreet bars of Osaka, where you sample local food and drink throughout the evening.

Day 10: Culinary Delights and Osaka's Bustling Energy

Step back in time and explore Osaka Castle, a magnificent symbol of the city. This grand 16th-century castle offers stunning views of the surrounding cityscape. Wander through the castle grounds, admire the intricate architecture and learn about the city's rich history.

Next, immerse yourself in the electrifying energy of Dotonbori District, Osaka's most vibrant district. Stroll along the Dotonbori River, lined with neon signs, bustling restaurants and unique shops. Indulge in Osaka's famous street food scene, from savory takoyaki (octopus balls) to fluffy okonomiyaki (savory pancake). Be sure to try the iconic pufferfish (fugu), a local delicacy (be sure to choose a licensed restaurant!).

For a truly unforgettable experience, consider booking a Dinner Cruise on the Dotombori River. Savor a delicious meal while enjoying the dazzling lights and vibrant atmosphere of the district from a unique perspective.

Day 11: A Day Trip to Hiroshima and Miyajima Island

Today, you’ll embark on a moving journey to Hiroshima, a city forever marked by World War II. A bullet train takes you to Hiroshima Station in under two hours.

Pay your respects at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, a poignant reminder of the devastating effects of atomic warfare. Visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and learn about the history of the bombing and the city's remarkable recovery. Light a paper lantern for peace at the Children's Peace Monument, a symbol of hope for the future.

Take a break for lunch and savor Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, a savory pancake filled with noodles and various toppings. This local specialty is a must-try for any food enthusiast.

In the afternoon, journey to Miyajima Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This captivating island is home to Itsukushima Shrine, a breathtaking vermilion shrine seemingly floating on the water. Walk along the iconic floating gate (鳥居, torii) and explore the intricate details of the shrine. Keep an eye out for the friendly sika deer roaming freely throughout the island.

Return to Osaka in the evening for a delicious dinner. Choose from a vast array of restaurants in Dotonbori or explore other vibrant districts like Umeda or Shinsaibashi (maybe a local spot recommended by your tour guide from the first night in Osaka).

Day 12: Osaka to Tokyo

Enjoy your final breakfast in Osaka before heading to Shin-Osaka Station to take the 2-.5-hour bullet train back to Tokyo. (Make sure to head to Shin-Osaka Station, not Osaka Station, to catch the correct train.) Make your way to your hotel for a possible early check in (A perk of many of the hotels I suggest in Tokyo.)

Your afternoon is dedicated to a truly captivating experience — TeamLab Borderless. Immerse yourself in this digital art museum renowned for its interactive and mind-bending installations. Set aside at least 2-4 hours to fully explore the exhibits. Get lost in mesmerizing light shows, wander through mirrored rooms that defy reality and even create your own digital art. Remember to purchase tickets online in advance, especially if you're visiting during peak season or on weekends.

After your artistic adventure, refuel with a delicious dinner near TeamLab Borderless. The museum is located in the Odaiba area, offering a vast array of dining options. Indulge in fresh seafood at a local sushi restaurant, savor authentic Japanese cuisine at a cozy ramen shop or explore international flavors at one of Odaiba's many restaurants. The choice is yours!

If you have extra time and energy, consider exploring the vibrant nightlife of Odaiba. Take a ride on the giant Ferris wheel for breathtaking city views, or enjoy a leisurely stroll along the waterfront, soaking in the atmosphere before calling it a night in Tokyo.

Day 13: Japan Treasures

On your last full day in Japan, consider reflecting on the incredible journey you’ve just experienced. Embrace the joy of gifting by dedicating part of the day to finding the perfect souvenirs for your loved ones (and perhaps yourself!). Tokyo offers a treasure trove of classic Japanese items:

Kimono or Yukata: A timeless symbol of Japan, a Kimono (full-length robe) or Yukata (summer kimono) makes a stunning and authentic gift.

Chopsticks: A practical and beautiful present. Chopsticks come in a wide range of styles and materials like wood, lacquerware or even bamboo. Opt for a set with a chopstick rest for a complete presentation.

Tea and Tea Accessories: For the tea lover, a sampler pack of premium Japanese green teas (like Matcha) or a beautiful tea set is a thoughtful gift.

Japanese Snacks: Indulge your sweet tooth and bring back a selection of delectable Japanese snacks. From Kit Kats with unique flavors to savory rice crackers, the options are endless!

Kokeshi Dolls: These charming hand-crafted wooden dolls from Northern Japan come in various sizes and designs. They make a delightful and unique souvenir.

Ukiyo-e Woodblock Prints: For art enthusiasts, consider a beautiful Ukiyo-e woodblock print, depicting traditional Japanese scenes or historical figures.

The beauty of this final day remaining open-ended provides the flexibility to explore hidden gems you might have discovered during your trip. Perhaps you stumbled upon a captivating museum you'd love to visit, or a specific restaurant recommendation from a local that piqued your interest. This is your day to follow your whims and create unforgettable final memories in Japan!

End your trip on a high note and treat yourself to an unforgettable experience — drinks at the Four Seasons Hotel. Savor a handcrafted cocktail while gazing at the breathtaking panoramic views of the Tokyo cityscape. It's the perfect way to toast your incredible Japanese adventure and capture a picture-perfect ending.

Day 14: Konnichiwa Until Next Time!

After a delicious breakfast, it's time to say goodbye to Japan. Your 14-day Japan Itinerary has been jam-packed with cultural exploration, but depending on your flight time, you might have time for just one more stop.

Consider an early morning exploration of the Imperial Palace East Gardens. Witness the serene beauty before the crowds arrive, capturing a final glimpse of historical Japan before your flight home.
