Rome and the Mediterranean: A Journey With Virgin Voyages
Curator’s statement

In late May of 2024, I embarked on my first Virgin Voyages cruise, and it was an experience that truly exceeded my expectations. The cruise was filled with delightful surprises, from the phenomenal food to the swanky, stylish spaces that created a vibrant and energetic atmosphere. The staff onboard were not only fun and personable, but also made every moment feel special. One of the most unique aspects was the tattoo shop on the ship, where I got my first-ever tattoo while sailing the seas — an unforgettable memory! The spa was another highlight, offering a magical retreat with a special mud and salt room that provided the ultimate relaxation. This cruise was a perfect blend of adventure, luxury and personalized experiences, making it a trip I will never forget.

Virgin Voyages offers an exciting and unique cruise experience perfect for travelers seeking a blend of adventure, relaxation and luxury. Departing from the vibrant port city of Barcelona, Spain, this Mediterranean cruise is packed with unforgettable experiences and breathtaking destinations. For those planning to stay in Barcelona before or after the cruise, there are plenty of fantastic hotels to choose from that cater to every budget. For an upscale, luxurious stay, the Almanac Barcelona is a top choice, known for its refined elegance and Michelin Key accolades. If you’re looking for something more affordable but equally charming, The Hoxton Poblenou provides a stylish and eclectic atmosphere that will make your stay memorable.

When it comes to packing for this cruise, there are a few essentials to consider. A bathing suit is a must for the onboard pools, hot tubs and the spa, which is open to all genders. If you plan to enjoy the mudroom in the spa, bring a swimsuit that you don’t mind getting dirty — while the mud washes out fine, it’s best to avoid white or light colors just to be safe. Make sure to pack something red for the signature "scarlet night," a lively onboard event where guests are encouraged to dress in red to join the festive atmosphere. Depending on the time of year, pack a mix of clothing suitable for varying weather conditions. In early spring, for example, you might experience both warm sunny days and sudden rain showers. If you plan to visit any of the beautiful churches or monasteries at the ports, bring appropriate attire such as a shawl or scarf to cover your shoulders, as well as clothes that cover your knees.

The ship itself is a marvel of modern design and offers a wide variety of dining options that cater to every palate. From a traditional steakhouse and Italian restaurant to a Korean BBQ and Mexican eatery, there is something for everyone. Health-conscious travelers will appreciate the plant-based dining options, while those with a sweet tooth can indulge at the ice cream parlor or the experimental food experience. A standout feature is "The Galley," a food-hall-style area that replaces the traditional cruise buffet with different stalls offering a variety of cuisines. Best of all, most of the dining options are included in the cruise fare, with only a few specialty items and drinks requiring an additional charge.

Complimentary beverages include soda, water, drip coffee and tea, and most entertainment and classes are also included, making for a truly all-inclusive experience. However, there are additional costs for certain amenities such as spa treatments, tattoos, gambling and some specialty activities and games.

Onboard amenities are abundant and cater to all interests. For those focused on wellness, the ship boasts not only pools, hot tubs and a spa, but also a state-of-the-art gym with a yoga studio, cycle studio and lifting area. There's also a range of fun fitness classes. An outdoor fitness area adds a playful touch with its basketball court and swings. Entertainment on the ship is diverse and plentiful, featuring large shows in two dedicated venues as well as spontaneous pop-up performances throughout the ship. There’s even a casino and a game room with board games and trivia for those who enjoy a bit of friendly competition.

One of the most appealing aspects of a Virgin Voyages cruise is that it's adults-only, making it an ideal choice for couples, groups of friends or solo travelers looking for a sophisticated and lively atmosphere without the presence of children. The adults-only policy allows for unique onboard activities such as bar crawls, drag bingo and a host of other fun experiences that are geared towards an adult audience.

As for port calls, each destination offers something unique. In Barcelona, the must-see attractions include the panoramic views from Montjuïc, the stunning Montserrat, the iconic La Sagrada Familia and the charming Gothic Quarter. In Toulon, a day trip to Saint Tropez is highly recommended, where you can enjoy a leisurely lunch near the yachts and people-watch at Senequier, sampling the local Tarte Tropézienne. At Marina Di Carrara, a visit to Florence is a must. Don't miss the Statue of David at the Galleria dell'Accademia, the breathtaking Duomo of Santa Maria del Fiore, the lush Boboli Gardens if the weather is good and the spectacular views from Piazzale Michelangelo. For a taste of local flavors, try the Bistecca alla Fiorentina, truffle dishes and Chianti.

A domed top to a historic building

From Civitavecchia, the short trip to Rome is essential, where you can explore the Roman Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountain and the Vatican to see St. Peter's Basilica. Be sure to savor the traditional dishes of carbonara, cacio e pepe and artichokes while in Rome.

Lastly, Ibiza offers a mix of experiences depending on your preferences. If you're looking to party, you're in luck, as Virgin Voyages includes an overnight stay here so you can enjoy the island's famous nightlife. For a more relaxed experience, spend time at one of Ibiza's beautiful coves or beach clubs or explore the old town of Eivissa, where you can shop at the many charming boutiques and local vendors.

Overall, a Virgin Voyages Mediterranean cruise is perfect for those looking for a sophisticated, adults-only experience that combines relaxation, adventure and cultural immersion. With its unique onboard amenities, diverse dining options and unforgettable destinations, this cruise is sure to provide an experience like no other.

Adults-only experience

This cruise is adults-only, meaning that only sailors 18 and older are allowed on board. This creates a more mature, lively atmosphere and allows for activities and entertainment tailored specifically to adult travelers.

Best times to travel

The Mediterranean is best visited during the late spring to early fall months (May to October), when the weather is warm and most of the popular attractions are open. However, early spring and late fall can also offer pleasant weather with fewer crowds, making it a great time for those looking to avoid peak season.

Must-do activities

Don’t miss the signature "Scarlet Night Party," where everyone dresses in red for a night of dancing and fun. Take advantage of the unique onboard amenities, such as the tattoo studio and the mud and salt room in the spa. Make sure to explore the ship’s entertainment options, including the pop-up performances and fitness classes, to fully experience what Virgin Voyages has to offer.

Need to know

For cruisers who have experienced other cruise lines, it’s important to know that a Virgin Voyages cruise offers a completely different experience. If you’re looking for a cruise that is less formal and more vibrant, with a focus on unique experiences and a relaxed atmosphere, this is the perfect option for you. Be prepared for a modern and unconventional cruise experience. There is no traditional buffet; instead, you have access to various dining options that offer fresh, high-quality food. There is also no formal dress code, so pack comfortably and bring outfits for both casual and more upscale settings.
