Off the Beaten Track: Boutique Hotels in Sicily
Curator’s statement

Growing up in a rural Australian town, one of the large settlements for Sicilian Italians, Sicily has always held a very special place in my heart. Surrounded by the vibrant culture and warmth of my Italian friends during my childhood, I was fortunate to experience the rich traditions and incredible culinary delights brought to life by their beloved Nonnas. These experiences ignited a deep passion within me for Italy as a whole, but specifically for the unique wonders of Sicily, a land where love, family and extraordinary cuisine are woven into the very fabric of life. With Italian Australians making up the sixth largest ancestry group in Australia, sharing the beauty, history and spirit of Sicily with fellow travelers is not just a passion of mine but a heartfelt mission. Here is my guide to my favorite boutique hotels in Sicily.

Sicily is a travel destination rapidly growing in popularity, but it remains the perfect spot for an off-the-beaten-path adventure. Having recently returned from this enchanting island, I can confidently say it offers a mosaic of unique experiences just waiting to be discovered. Each corner of Sicily boasts its own distinct charm. What’s even better is the proximity of Sicily's diverse areas means it is ideal for a multi-stop journey. Why settle for exploring one place when you can experience so much more? Traveling through Sicily is incredibly easy, allowing for numerous stops to immerse yourself in the island's rich history, vibrant culture and breathtaking natural beauty. Whether you’re wandering through medieval villages, savoring local delicacies in seaside towns or exploring hidden coves, Sicily promises a melting pot of cultures and experiences, far from the typical Italian tourist trails.

One of the bonuses of still being off the main tourist trail is the abundance of boutique hotels Sicily has on offer. Boutique hotels often offer a genuine glimpse into a destination and are something I seek out whenever I travel. These types of hotels are more than just places to stay — they are portals to the authentic heart of a destination, and this was particularly evident in Sicily. Boutique hotels are known for their distinctive character and intimate ambiance, providing a stark contrast to the impersonal nature of larger hotel chains. Staying in boutique hotels in Sicily allows you to experience the true essence of Sicilian hospitality.

If you are looking for an ideal two-week boutique hotel Sicily trip, this is my suggestion:

Cefalù - 3 nights: Taliammari

Boutique hotel recommendation, Taliammari is nestled in the heart of Cefalù's old town with a stunning rooftop terrace and recently renovated rooms & facilities, this is the perfect place to explore this charming coastal town.

Restaurant recommendation: 22 Cucina Isolana

Top things to do: Boat tour of the Cefalù caves

Mount Etna - 2 nights: Monaci delle Terre Nere

Set on the slopes of Mount Etna, Monaci delle Terre Nere is a stunning eco-winery resort that seamlessly blends luxury with nature.

Restaurant recommendation: Locanda Nerello

Top things to do: Sunset tour of Mt Etna

Taormina - 3 nights: Taormina Hotel Villa Ducale

Perched high above Taormina, Villa Ducale is a small but luxurious boutique hotel offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and Mount Etna.

Restaurant Recommendation: Teatro44

Top things to do: Local Cooking class with Chef Mimmo

Syracuse - 3 nights: Byssus Suites

An elegant boutique hotel located right beside Ortigia, the historic center of Syracuse, Byssus Suites offers stylish rooms with exceptional service.

Restaurant recommendation: Le Vin de l’Assassin

Top things to do: Boat trip of Ortigia and surrounding caves

Noto - 3 nights: Zahir Country House

A beautifully preserved Sicilian Farmhouse, Zahir Country House is a recently updated, secluded and serene countryside retreat near Noto, surrounded by nature.

Restaurant recommendation: Gastro Matto

Top things to do: Get lost in the old town streets while marveling at the stunning Baroque architecture

My top five insider travel tips for Sicily:

1. Visit local markets

In my opinion, one of the most authentic experiences in Sicily is experiencing the vibrant atmosphere of the local markets, and it is truly something I will never forget. Syracuse’s Ortigia market is a fantastic place to taste local produce, cheeses, olives and delicious street food (don’t miss La Salumeria - Fratelli Burgio in the Ortigia market of Syracuse for the world’s best sandwich) as are many of the local markets. Sicily is famous for its street food, so make sure you don't miss the delicious arancini (stuffed rice balls), panelle (chickpea fritters) and sfincione (Sicilian pizza).

2. Learn a few Italian phrases and respect local customs

While most Sicilians speak some English, knowing a few basic Italian phrases will go a long way during your travels. Dress modestly when visiting churches and religious sites. Sicilians are generally conservative, and showing respect for their customs and traditions will be greatly appreciated.

3. Take a siesta

Many shops and businesses close in the afternoon for a siesta, typically between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm. Use this time to relax, enjoy a leisurely long lunch or take a nap, then head out when everything reopens in the cooler evening hours.

4. Explore off the beaten path

Beyond the more well-known sites mentioned in the itinerary, don’t forget to explore the lesser-known towns and villages like Ragusa, Modica and Scicli. Each has its unique charm and fewer tourists, offering a more authentic experience. Stopping off for lunch on a driving day between stops is a brilliant way to get a taster of these little authentic gems.

5. Taste the local wine

Sicily produces excellent wines, so if wine is your thing, try a glass of Nero d'Avola, Etna Rosso or the delicious Marsala dessert wine. Visiting a local vineyard for a tasting can be an amazing experience, especially in the stunning Etna region with the stunning backdrop of Mount Etna.

Bonus tip: take it slow

Sicilian life is laid-back and relaxed, so embrace the slower pace, take your time to enjoy meals, savor memorable moments and let yourself be immersed in the island’s rich culture and natural beauty.

Whether you're a history buff, a foodie or an adventure seeker, Sicily offers something for everyone. Its diverse attractions, boutique hotels, rich culture and natural beauty make it an ideal destination for those looking to venture off the beaten path. So get in touch and let me plan your ultimate Sicilian adventure with soulful Boutique Hotels, memorable culinary experiences and stunning hidden gems.
