My top five insider travel tips for Sicily:

1. Visit local markets

In my opinion, one of the most authentic experiences in Sicily is experiencing the vibrant atmosphere of the local markets, and it is truly something I will never forget. Syracuse’s Ortigia market is a fantastic place to taste local produce, cheeses, olives and delicious street food (don’t miss La Salumeria - Fratelli Burgio in the Ortigia market of Syracuse for the world’s best sandwich) as are many of the local markets. Sicily is famous for its street food, so make sure you don't miss the delicious arancini (stuffed rice balls), panelle (chickpea fritters) and sfincione (Sicilian pizza).

2. Learn a few Italian phrases and respect local customs

While most Sicilians speak some English, knowing a few basic Italian phrases will go a long way during your travels. Dress modestly when visiting churches and religious sites. Sicilians are generally conservative, and showing respect for their customs and traditions will be greatly appreciated.

3. Take a siesta

Many shops and businesses close in the afternoon for a siesta, typically between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm. Use this time to relax, enjoy a leisurely long lunch or take a nap, then head out when everything reopens in the cooler evening hours.

4. Explore off the beaten path

Beyond the more well-known sites mentioned in the itinerary, don’t forget to explore the lesser-known towns and villages like Ragusa, Modica and Scicli.
