Discover Aviation History: A Night at the TWA Hotel, New York
Curator’s statement

As an aviation fanatic, being able to stay at the iconic TWA Hotel at New York's JFK airport was a dream come true. Not only is it an old airline terminal, it feels like you're stepping back in time with the old flip-board, airline equipment and beautiful rooftop views of the airfield. I would stay here once again in a heartbeat and recommend that you get the chance to visit and have a cocktail if you can't stay.

This unique hotel, which is made of an old terminal building, it's truly one of a kind. Connected directly to JFK's terminal five in busy New York City, meaning no transportation to or from the airport. Great for a few nights stay either at the beginning or end of your trip. The hotel has easy parking at great rates, easy access to rideshares and access to New York's public transportation via the Air Train within terminal five.

The building itself is from the 1960's, and still has some iconic features. One of my favorites is the many museum exhibits available to view free of charge, even if you're not staying at the hotel. From airline uniforms, to airline menus from "The golden age of air travel". It's amazing to take a step back in time to see the history of modern aviation and see how much things have changed.

Take a step outside the main building and you get to see "Connie", an old aircraft that used to fly for TWA. Step inside Connie and you get to see the cockpit and sit in the original seats while drinking a cocktail from the in-aircraft bar. Explore more around the hotel and you can find another bar in the Sunken Lounge, which is open until midnight on most nights.

The rooms themselves continue the luxurious modern take on the golden-era feel, with the signature TWA red making its way into the room for an accent. Multiple outlets are available and an in-room bar with glassware is easily accessible. I have no complaints about the bed either, and I loved the posters highlighting destinations hanging above it. The windows are very big and some rooms even offer some great views of the airport and airfield. A great place to relax after a long travel day.

Another great area to relax was the rooftop infinity pool. Staying the night in August gave my travel companion and I access, however during some months and times, there is a small coverage charge. The pool is heated and open all year long to give you some amazing opportunities to view the busy airfields of JFK airport. There is also a pool bar if you need some refreshments.

Get hungry at all during your stay? Don't worry, there's a few food options for you to indulge in. During my trip I visited and ate at the Food Hall, which is located in the main part of the building right near the entrance which used to be the check-in area. Sandwiches, ice-cream, crepes, juices and a few other options were available to grab from local vendors.

If you wanted a more traditional sit-down experience, there is also a place called the Paris Café that offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. A menu and hours are available on the TWA Hotel website.

Overall, I had a great experience at the TWA Hotel. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who needs a great hotel to stay near the airport, or anyone who likes aviation and history. The staff were great and the hotel's history and feel is hard to beat.

Need to know

I recommend the TWA Hotel to anyone looking for a great experience and something cool to show off to friends and family. Whether it's just staying for the night, getting a room for the day on your layover or just passing through to see the history and small museum exhibits the building has to offer, it truly is that one-of-a-kind place to stay.
