Backroads Trip to the Lofoten Islands
Curator’s statement

Backroads Active Adventure Travel offers fun guided hikes on the Lofoten Islands, an archipelago in Norway. The scenery was unbelievably beautiful and it felt like a dream to wake up there everyday of the trip. The leaders were experienced, friendly and attentive to the needs of the group. The accommodations were spectacular. They were comfortable and luxurious and fit into the locations. I can't wait for my next trip.

Backroads has become a leader in active travel for a reason. They have a wide variety of destinations offering biking, hiking and multi-sport adventures. After five different trips with Backroads, I can honestly recommend them to anyone looking for active travel. Not only do you get excellent, experienced guides, but the hotels offer luxury accommodations to relax after your activity. The restaurants are also delicious examples of sophisticated modern local cuisine.

I chose the Lofoten Islands in northern Norway for the scenery. The jagged mountains seem to rise directly out of the sea. After a bit of a climb on our group hikes, we were often treated to a view of white sandy beaches and other islands in the distances. Following the activities, there is always time for a trip to the spa if you choose. In Norway, I loved the saunas followed by a dip in the sea or hot tub. Two of the three hotel stays were in robust, historic fishermen huts. The region was known for its cod fishing. Now these fishermen's huts have been beautifully restored and appointed for luxury and comfort with lovely views of quaint harbors. The location above the Arctic Circle is absolutely worth the trip. You’ll be pampered by views and the extra mile Backroads goes to make you feel like you’re on the vacation of your life.

Need to know

The Backroads Lofoten Islands trip would be great for couples, solos and groups of friends. The location is ideal for hikers. There are always a variety of routes offered so you can really make each day and the whole trip what you want it to be. The leaders are there as guides, but also have a service-minded approach to each trip. I can't recommend them enough.
