Family Adventure in Chobe: A Botswana Safari Experience
Curator’s statement

Chobe National Park is a place where adventure, awe and education come together. Staying at Elephant Valley Lodge, we embraced the experience of glamping — something our kids loved just as much as we did — and explored the park on both land and river safaris. Along the way, we encountered everything from giraffes and zebras to warthogs, dung beetles and tortoises. We also learned about the vital conservation efforts that protect these animals and their habitats. Watching my boys marvel at elephants splashing and playing in the river, and witnessing lions up close, were unforgettable moments that brought the wild to life in the most extraordinary way.

Chobe National Park, located in northern Botswana, is one of Africa’s premier safari destinations. It is home to an incredible diversity of wildlife and is renowned for its large elephant population. What makes Chobe especially unique is the chance to experience both overland and river safaris. Giving travelers multiple ways to encounter animals up close. River safaris along the Chobe River are a highlight — gliding past elephants wading, watching hippos surface alongside the boat and spotting crocodiles lounging on the banks. The stunning contrast between the lush riverbanks and open savannah makes every game drive and river cruise feel fresh and exciting.

We stayed at Elephant Valley Lodge, a wonderful option for families and anyone seeking an authentic but comfortable safari. Tented accommodations strike the perfect balance between adventure and modern comfort, and the lodge overlooks a waterhole that draws wildlife throughout the day. One of our favorite moments was watching elephants from the pool — an extraordinary experience that made it feel like the safari never really stopped. Our guide, Simon, was exceptional — patient, knowledgeable and endlessly enthusiastic. He brought every drive to life for our boys, teaching them about everything from lion tracks to dung beetles. He also ensured we got to see both iconic wildlife and smaller, often-overlooked creatures.

Splish Splash!

Chobe is an ideal destination for families, thanks to its variety of animals, landscapes, and the ability to mix river and land-based safaris. Our boys were thrilled to spot giraffes, zebras, warthogs, tortoises and of course, the elephants and lions we had hoped to see. For families, I highly recommend properties like Elephant Valley Lodge that offer a welcoming atmosphere for children and guides like Simon who make the experience meaningful for all ages. For couples or honeymooners, Chobe also offers more exclusive and luxurious lodge options with private suites and romantic settings.

Chobe’s location also makes it easy to combine with Victoria Falls, just a short drive away, or as part of a larger Botswana itinerary including the Okavango Delta. Whether you’re on your first safari or returning to Africa for a deeper exploration, Chobe offers an unforgettable experience. This is a place where you can witness elephants playing in the river, lions resting in the shade, and even spot wildlife from the edge of the pool. It’s a destination that stays with you long after you leave.

Need to know

  • Timing and seasonality: The best time to visit Chobe National Park for peak wildlife viewing is during the dry season (May to October), when animals congregate along the Chobe River. We visited during this time and saw incredible concentrations of elephants, along with a wide variety of other wildlife. If traveling during the rainy season (November to April), expect lush landscapes and fewer crowds, but know that some game may be more dispersed.

  • Combining river & land safaris: One of the best things about Chobe is being able to experience both overland game drives and river safaris — and I highly recommend doing both. The river safaris, in particular, offer a unique perspective, with opportunities to see elephants playing in the water, hippos and crocodiles up close. Don’t skip these excursions — they were some of our most memorable moments!

  • Great for families (with a few considerations): Chobe is a wonderful safari destination for families, especially if your kids are curious about wildlife and nature. However, since game drives can be long and bumpy, I recommend this trip for children who are old enough to handle several hours out in the bush (generally age 6+ depending on temperament). Lodges like Elephant Valley Lodge are great for kids, offering family-friendly accommodations and guides (like Simon!) who are excellent at engaging younger travelers.

  • Border proximity & extensions: Chobe is located close to Victoria Falls, making it easy to combine both destinations in one trip. Keep in mind that you'll be crossing borders between Botswana and Zimbabwe (or Zambia, depending on which side of the Falls you visit), so it's essential to plan for visas in advance. A KAZA UniVisa is often the best option if you’re visiting both countries and is available on arrival for many nationalities.

  • Packing tips: For safari, pack neutral-colored, lightweight clothing, a good hat, sunscreen and layers for cool mornings and evenings. Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens will definitely enhance the experience. If you're traveling with kids, having small activities (like wildlife checklists or safari journals) can help keep them engaged on longer drives.

  • Health & safety: Botswana is considered a low-risk malaria area, but malaria prophylaxis is often recommended — check with a travel health professional before you go. The lodges and guides are very safety-conscious, and as always, following the guide’s instructions during game drives and while at camp is essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

  • Booking recommendations: Chobe is a popular destination, especially in high season, so I recommend booking accommodations and safari activities well in advance, especially for families needing multiple rooms or specific tent configurations. Lodges like Elephant Valley offer excellent value for families wanting a true safari feel without the ultra-luxury price point.
