Maximize your Carnival Cruise experience

Dive into my top tips to make the most of your Carnival cruise—whether you're craving a peaceful retreat or an action-packed adventure. Don’t let any misconceptions about rowdy crowds or limited amenities deter you from discovering the unique blend of fun, value and relaxation that Carnival provides. Allow my insights to guide you towards an extraordinary voyage!

Reflecting on our first Carnival cruise, my husband and I took a spontaneous leap in 2016, setting sail to Canada from New York City. We knew Carnival wasn’t the epitome of luxury, but we were thrilled to dive into the cruising experience. Since then, we’ve embarked on 17 voyages, with eight more on the horizon. I vividly recall a conversation with a well-traveled gentleman at the Atrium Bar on that inaugural trip. He was a seasoned cruiser with a wealth of experience, yet his words struck a chord: “Carnival may not rival Celebrity or Holland America in luxury, but it’s FUN. If you plan your time wisely and do your homework, Carnival is worth every penny.” Over the years, I’ve encountered numerous travelers who share this sentiment, and I wholeheartedly agree. Despite recent reports of “brawls” and an adult-oriented atmosphere tarnishing Carnival’s reputation, the line is actively working to restore its family-friendly, budget-conscious image. My recent voyage reaffirmed this commitment, showcasing Carnival’s dedication to offering a relaxed, casual vibe with abundant onboard options for everyone.

Pre & post-cruise stays

One of the most rewarding aspects of cruising from Manhattan is the opportunity to immerse yourself in all that New York City has to offer before and after your trip. From opulent to budget-friendly accommodations, NYC caters to every preference. The city’s iconic skyline, lively Broadway shows and renowned museums set the stage for an exciting pre-cruise adventure. Explore Coney Island’s sandy shores, delve into the cultural tapestry of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, or discover hidden gems across the river in New Jersey. Each of these experiences can transform your cruise into a full-fledged vacation extravaganza.

Essentials to pack

Carnival’s casual and fun-centric atmosphere might lack the white-glove service of high-end lines, but with a few essential items, you can ensure a smooth-sailing experience:

Lanyards: With pre-punched Carnival key cards, lanyards make accessing your card effortless.

Insulated Cups: Perfect for keeping drinks chilled by the pool or staying hydrated throughout the day.

Towel Clips: Keep your towel secure on windy deck chairs.

Extension Cords & Power Converters: Many cabins have limited outlets, and European plug adapters might be necessary.

Wine & Opener: Carnival permits one bottle of wine per adult in your stateroom—don’t forget your corkscrew!

Beach Bag: Essential for excursions, as none are provided on board.

Magnetic Hooks: Ideal for hanging hats, towels, or small bags in your cabin.

Luggage Tag Holders: Invest in reusable holders to avoid the hassle of taping or stapling tags.

Embarkation

Navigating the Manhattan Cruise Terminal is a breeze, with clear signage, short distances to check-in and ample parking options. Whether you're driving from the north or south, parking is available on several piers, all just a short stroll to check-in. For a guaranteed spot, pre-paying is a good idea, though finding parking has never been an issue. Upon arriving at Pier 88, you’ll be greeted by the magnificent sight of the ship—a thrilling start to your journey.

If you’re in a suite or have purchased the Faster to the Fun package, dedicated lines for security and check-in expedite the process. Stick to your assigned arrival time, as agents are strict about early arrivals. Be prepared for an additional round of security and canine checks on carry-on luggage, a measure Carnival has implemented to address recent negative press. While it may seem intimidating, the process is efficient and discreet, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience without being intrusive.

The ship: Carnival Venezia

Carnival Venezia is a delightful blend of Carnival’s signature fun and Italian elegance, a product of the unique fleet shuffle post-pandemic when Carnival welcomed several Costa Cruises ships. The ship’s layout may feel familiar to Carnival regulars, but it’s the Mediterranean-inspired touches that truly stand out. From the charming piazza-style central pool area to the spritz-focused drink menus, you’ll feel as though you’ve been transported to Italy.

The ship’s public spaces, including the Cloud 9 Spa, Sports Square, Waterworks water park, and Serenity deck, deliver everything you’d expect from Carnival. However, it’s the Italian-themed dining and bars that make Venezia special. Specialty restaurants like Bonsai Teppanyaki and Il Viaggio offer international and Mediterranean flavors, while the exclusive Terrazza Carnivale—a private retreat for select stateroom guests—provides a serene escape on deck 5. Imagine unwinding in this secluded area, complete with its own bar, hot tubs and breakfast service, all while gazing at the ship’s wake—a tranquil haven amid the bustling ship.

The Venezia’s staff excels in maintaining the ship’s immaculate condition. From the dining rooms to the bars and public spaces, every detail is meticulously attended to. This impeccable cleanliness significantly enhances the ship’s overall atmosphere.

Entertainment & activities

Carnival is renowned for its entertainment, particularly its comedy shows. Although the comedians on our trip weren’t my favorites, there was no shortage of laughter throughout the ship. With trivia games, live music and lively theater performances, there’s always something happening. While we opted for a more relaxed approach this time, focusing on rejuvenation, Carnival offers plenty of high-energy options—from deck parties to casino games. There’s never a dull moment on board.

Don’t miss the onboard spa, a sanctuary of indulgence at prices that won’t break the bank. Book your treatments before boarding to enjoy discounts of up to 30%, and for even more savings, schedule them on port days. My husband recently indulged in the Express Shave, a luxurious 30-minute experience featuring a deep-cleansing exfoliation and a double-close shave, leaving his skin refreshed and smooth. It’s perfect for those who want to look sharp without spending too much time away from the fun—and no need to pack a razor! While he enjoyed his treatment, I savored a cocktail and a good book, and before I knew it, he was back, glowing and revitalized.

Dining

Carnival’s main dining room and buffet options may not be renowned for gourmet cuisine, but their famous chocolate melting cake is an absolute must-try. The real magic happens in specialty dining venues. We dined at Bonsai Teppanyaki (twice!) and the Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse, both of which offered mouth-watering dishes and top-notch service. The teppanyaki’s filet was tender beyond compare, and the exceptional service made us return for another night. Pro tip: Carnival allows one bottle of wine per adult in the stateroom. Bring it to dinner for a $15 corkage fee or enjoy it in your room at no additional charge.

For lunch, Guy’s Burger Joint is a popular choice, though be prepared for a crowd. For a unique option, visit La Strada Grill on deck 5—an Italian BBQ-style buffet that offers a tasty and less crowded alternative for midday dining.

Port calls: Bermuda

When cruising to Bermuda, the Royal Naval Dockyard is a highlight. Whether you stay close to the port or venture further afield, Bermuda’s stunning turquoise waters and lush landscapes are always captivating. For a quick, satisfying meal, visit The Frog & Onion Pub, a historic spot serving hearty British and Bermudian dishes alongside local craft beers. Just a short walk from the pier, Snorkel Bay Beach offers a relaxed beach day, though there’s a small entrance fee and additional charges for amenities.

For a bit more adventure, head to Horseshoe Bay Beach, where pink sand meets dramatic rock formations. It’s a favorite destination for families with its shallow waters and ample exploration opportunities. Golf enthusiasts should not miss the breathtaking Port Royal Golf Course, a short taxi ride away. The ocean views alone are worth the visit and cruise ship specials make it an easy day trip for golfers of all levels.

Bermuda offers more than beaches. History buffs can explore St. George, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or visit Hamilton, the charming capital. For a quieter experience, Warwick Long Bay provides a peaceful retreat away from the crowds.

Inclusions

Carnival Venezia includes a wealth of amenities in your cruise fare, such as your stateroom, meals in the main dining room and access to pools, hot tubs, entertainment and youth programs. Specialty dining, alcohol, spa services and shore excursions are available for an additional fee, but the included options offer ample value. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned traveler, Carnival provides a perfect blend of fun, relaxation and memorable experiences.

Need to know

Don’t overlook Carnival as a vacation option—it might just surprise you. If the port location suits you, whether you’re a local or traveling from afar, Carnival Venezia is a fantastic way to add extra excitement to your trip. Known for its “Fun Ships,” Carnival delivers exactly that—an experience tailored to your vacation desires.

Sailing from Port Canaveral in the winter or from NYC in the warmer months, Carnival Venezia offers something for everyone. Picture yourself on the Lido Pool Deck, where the energy is contagious with dancing, games and movies, all while enjoying a refreshing cocktail or smoothie. Or perhaps you’ll find solace in the serene ambiance of the Terrazza Carnivale, complete with a dedicated bar, snacks and a relaxing atmosphere perfect for unwinding. Maybe the cozy, indoor vibes at Hero's Tribute Bar, honoring service members, nestled within the ship's art gallery, will appeal to you.

No matter what you’re seeking, take the time to explore the diverse spaces, sample the varied food and drink offerings and discover your favorites. Whether you rise early to seize the day or prefer a leisurely morning on your balcony, the choice is yours. Set aside any preconceived notions and embrace the fun-filled journey that Carnival Venezia offers. Approach your adventure with an open mind and let the fun take center stage!
