Things to Do with Kids Under 12 in New Orleans

New Orleans is world renowned for being boozy, jazzy, and the ultimate celebration party destination! There are revelers dancing in the streets, dark-lit speakeasy and 100% proof daiquiris on almost every corner. Because of its reputation, New Orleans may not come first to mind as a family-friendly destination, but there are quite a few kid (and adult) friendly things to do. My family recently held our “Faison Family Gathering” during the first week of August with a few kids in attendance. Here are a few tips for things to do with kids under 12 in New Orleans.

First, let’s talk about food. When dining in the French Quarter and immediate surrounding area, there are very few restaurants that have a kid’s menu, so take a look at menus in advance to be sure there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

Second, Bourbon Street, when the street lights come on, is not kid-friendly. To see the iconic Bourbon Street at night is a sight to behold. But the vibe may be too much for young children. It is recommended to visit during the day and head back after bedtime for an adult libation!

Third, grab an Audubon Nature Society 3-in-1 pass. This pass offers access to the New Orleans Zoo, New Orleans Aquarium and the Insectarium for a package deal of $60/adults and $55/youth. You have three days to enter all three attractions. The New Orleans Zoo is located in uptown New Orleans (on Magazine Street) and will require transportation, and parking is free. You can also make a donation to the Society by parking in a reserved spot—how cool! The Aquarium and Insectarium are within walking distance of downtown, located down Canal Street and across from the Riverwalk. Don’t forget to get your picture mementos at each attraction!

Fourth, plan a full day at City Park. City Park has a plethora of activities for everyone! Enjoy attractions such as the Botanical Garden, the Louisiana Children’s Museum, the Carousel Gardens Amusement Park, putt putt games; as well as fishing, boating, gardening and so much more! Of course, you have to eat: there’s snoballs, beignets at Café du Monde, Kitchen in the Garden and pizzeria. There’s so much at City Park, you might need two days!

There are so many things that a family can do in New Orleans with children under 12 outside the French Quarter. In addition to the attractions listed, there are history walks, city tours and swamp tours. Use these tips to help plan your next family vacation in the Big Easy!

New Orleans is a celebration destination with lots of history and culture for all ages. Kids under 12 have a range of activities to keep them engaged and active while the adults reprieve in the shade with a beignet and a daiquiri!
