A Weekend with my Teenage Daughters in San Diego
Curator’s statement

I love taking my two teenage girls to San Diego for a long weekend. There’s so much to do - shop, eat, explore, rest, relax! Paradise Point is a great home-base. It has private individual casitas, room service, SUP boards to rent, bike rentals, s'mores. It truly has it all! Being in a wheelchair doesn’t stop me one bit. It’s a very accessible place, with ADA-compliant facilities and service providers that go above and beyond to make everyone feel accepted.

I took my two girls to Paradise Point for the first time several years ago. It was one of the best things I’ve ever done. We stayed in our own private casita — parking my car right outside the door. Since I’m an ambulatory wheelchair user, this is important to me. If I can keep my chair close, I don’t need an ADA room. The hotel worked with me to ensure that I had a room that would work with my specific needs.

Paradise Point also has everything my girls want. The first day, I took them on a jetski — we went zooming around the bay holding on to each other and laughing the whole way. It was just the thing we needed. Later that day, I rented SUP boards for my girls. I stayed back, since SUP isn’t great for my specific condition. But my girls had a great time, and I could hang out on a nearby beach and watch them. They then explored the island on the bikes that the resort has on hand while I indulged at the on-site spa.

One of the things I love about Paradise Point is how centrally located it is in San Diego. On day two, I drove the girls 30 minutes to Torrey Pines. The hotel up there is gorgeous! Not the vibe I was going for on this particular trip, but it’s an incredible place. But I took the girls to Torrey Pines Gliderport. This is one of the coolest places — and so accessible and friendly, no reservations required. Even if you’re not one to go on the flight, the “airport” has a cute bar, a snack shop (with great food) and a look out so you can watch the paragliders float about the cliffs and ocean. It’s an incredible place! And, if you are so inclined, just head into the shop and sign up for a tandem flight. They even have paragliding chairs and pilots that are certified in accessible flights. I wasn’t expecting to be able to go, but it was such a treat. And it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in my chair!

With local restaurants, so many activities and an incredible spa, this is a great family-friendly resort in a great city.
