48 Hours in Malibu, California
Curator’s statement

Malibu was one of three stops on my Southern California road trip in March of 2024. While there, my home away from home was Hotel June Malibu. This intimate, 13 room collection of bungalows, was the perfect landing pad after a day full of hiking and shopping. Its prime location, just off of the Pacific Coast Highway, but hidden away from tourists, made it a true respite. What stood out most was the incredibly friendly and hospitable staff, who were eager to make my stay as pleasant as possible. I look forward to returning as well as recreating the experience for my clients.

Malibu is located just 30 miles from Los Angeles, making it an easy stop or final destination. I recommend flying into LAX and getting a rental car so you can enjoy the scenic drive on the Pacific Coast Highway!

Once you've arrived, enjoy an oceanfront meal at Malibu Farm Pier Cafe, Spruzzo Restaurant & Bar or Moonshadows Malibu. A walk along the Malibu Fishing Pier is also a must, but beware it is a hotspot for tourists.

A view of a seafood shack in Malibu with a swordfish mounted onto the restaurant exterior and a blue, red and white color palette.

Now that you're re-energized, change into your hiking gear and prepare for breathtaking views. For a short but stunning hike, visit Point Dume Nature Preserve. There is plenty of paid parking available and easy access to the Cove Trail. A little over a mile, you'll enjoy majestic views of the Pacific Ocean, wildflowers and you may even spot a whale! During my hike, I saw numerous sea lions. For a longer trek, I recommend visiting Charmlee Wilderness Park. There is parking available as well as picnic tables and restrooms. There are several routes to choose from, ranging from two to four miles. I recommend using an app like AllTrails to select one that best suits your interests.

After working up a sweat on the trails, you've earned some retail therapy! Visit Malibu Country Mart, an outdoor mall with over 60 stores. Despite the unassuming name, the mall is actually home to numerous high end stores such as Fred Segal, Re/Done and John Varvatos. There are a number of locally owned boutiques as well, carrying surf-inspired home goods and apparel. The dining options are not to be missed either, including Tra di Noi, a local Italian favorite and Malibu staple, SunLife Organics, known for its healthy and delicious smoothies.

A view of the wooden boardwalk at the Malibu pier with people walking in the distance and lookout points.
A white bed in a hotel bedroom with art on the walls and a light shining on the wall above the bed.

When you've had your fill of sunshine and ocean waves (hard to imagine but the sun does have to go down at some point), you'll find light and airy vibes in your Hotel June bungalow, featuring a private outdoor seating area, complete with a hammock! Amenities also include a yoga mat plus access to digital fitness content, perfect for stretching after a long flight or hike. The delightful aroma of Aesop toiletries will put you further at ease. The hotel also features a heated pool, and nicely appointed outdoor seating areas. In the mornings, you're welcome to enjoy a coffee, juice or pastry in the lobby. Friendly staff will help you plan your day if you need suggestions, and ensure you are comfortable during your stay.

Trust me, it will be hard to leave! If you've got the time, I recommend continuing your journey north or south on the Pacific Coast Highway. Heading North, Santa Barbara is a worthwhile stop, or heading South, you'll hit Orange County gems like Newport and Laguna Beach.

Need to know

I recommend Malibu for those looking for a laidback retreat. While filled with oceanfront beauty, Malibu becomes a sleepy town in the evening. It's perfect for early risers who want to enjoy the sun during the day and peacefully re-charge in the evenings. A great choice for a babymoon or couples getaway.
