Our journey aboard the Bernina Express was nothing short of extraordinary. Setting off from Milano Centrale to Tirano, we were relieved to find no delays despite earlier concerns over a cargo train derailment. From Tirano to Chur, the transition from sun-drenched valleys to snow-kissed peaks was simply breathtaking. Adding to the charm were the complimentary Swiss tea and adorable Bernina tin of chocolates, elevating our journey through the Alps.
The train attendants were a highlight. They shared fascinating insights into the preservation efforts of the Romansh language. As well as other facts about the areas we were passing throughout this four hour rail journey. We were in the First Class carriage with the larger windows, which I highly recommend; however, in between each carriage there is a window they allow to open so that you can take photos of scenery without glare from any glass — or just stick your head out the window and live in the moment!
Upon reaching Chur, we found ourselves totally enchanted — it was so cute and clean, and all of the people were so kind. Our Swiss Quality hotel, conveniently located near the train station, offers a perfect sanctuary — complete with plush robes, slippers and chocolates on our pillows. They also have a wonderful gym and sauna, and so many options at the (included) breakfast each morning. The front desk made us dinner reservations at the nearby historic Hotel Stern on the evening of our arrival, and it was probably my favorite dining experience ever. We were definitely the only people there who were not Swiss or German, and the kitchen kept sending little tasting plates out to “the Americans” according to our funny waitress.
A particularly heartwarming moment came as we bid farewell, with our waitress presenting us with a charming goat toy and a hotel cookbook “to welcome us to Switzerland” - a thoughtful gesture, and one that I will always remember.
In hindsight, our journey aboard the Bernina Express and our time in Chur exceeded all expectations, leaving us with cherished memories and a longing to return.
Need to know
I recommend the Bernina Express for my clients who are embarking on a River Cruise in Basel, and who want to experience more of Switzerland prior to their cruise. If you're looking for a quiet, quaint escape for a little R&R (in a non-tropical and non-touristy place) I highly recommend staying in Chur for a long weekend or a few days.
