Curator’s statement
In February 2024, I did a site inspection while staying at the Ritz-Carlton Abama in Tenerife, Canary Islands. A combination of convenience (a 4-hour direct flight from London), great weather all year round, and a stunning oceanside property, this long weekend was exactly the break I needed from the London winter. I will be staying here again and highly recommend it to my clients.

Tenerife, one of the main islands in Canary Islands off the western coast of North Africa, is a great winter sun destination. It is easily accessible from most of Northern Europe with, for example, regular 4-hour direct flights from London. The Ritz-Carlton resort is a 30 minutes’ drive from Tenerife’s Southern airport, with ocean views along the route.
A long weekend here is more than feasible: after 3 nights, I felt refreshed and well-rested (although not quite ready to leave!).
The resort is split into two main sections: The Citadel (which is the main building complex) and The Villas (offering a more private experience). Both have family-friendly and adults-only areas. Inspired by Moorish architecture, the property boasts a beautiful design with its rusty pink exterior and lush gardens. Set on a hillside, you will have views of the Atlantic Ocean from pretty much anywhere on the property. I stayed in an ocean view room in the main Citadel, and adored the palm tree scattered view from my private veranda.
For those who crave the waves and sun, the beach club, set in a mountain enclave, is a short walk and cable car away (or complimentary mini-train ride!). There are also plenty of pools to choose from, including an infinity pool for guests staying in The Villas. Other perks include an award-winning spa, tennis courts, and golf course. There are seven restaurants on site, including MB, a two-Michelin starred Basque restaurant (or its sister restaurant, Txoko). My personal favorites were the vegetable forward cuisine at Verde Mar and the sunset views from El Mirador.
If you are here for longer, or are in the mood to explore, the Teide volcano is a short drive away, and can be accessed by cable car (or a hike, if you plan well in advance). There is also reliable whale watching on the island. There being 400-500 resident pilot whales all year round, as well as many other activities on offer around the island!
