Belmond's Mount Nelson: A Cape Town Classic
Curator’s statement

In town for both the 2024 "We Are Africa" conference and a post-event Fora FAM, I spent a dreamy week at "The Nellie." The grand dame of Cape Town delivered in both service and style, and I would highly recommend without hesitation.

Behind the private entry gates and set on nine lush acres in the Capetonian Gardens neighborhood, this iconic pink palace offers two heated swimming pools, two tennis courts, flowering gardens, "Librisa" botanical spa and dining options galore. A sprawling property yet private and intimate.

About the rooms

There are seven different wings across the hotel, with enough variety for any type of traveler. Some highlights:

  • Garden Cottage Suite: This picket-fenced cottage makes for a romantic hideaway next to the secluded 16-year-old pool and tucked in behind a scented rose garden.

  • Honeysuckle Cottage: A two-bedroom suite with a trellised verandah and private flowering gardens The cottage includes a kitchen, dining room and lounge. Finally, the option to add a rollaway means it can accommodate up to five guests.

There are connecting options aplenty across their suites, for both deluxe and superior rooms.

Wellness and relaxation

  • Librisa Spa: No need to request an early check-in with this tranquil conservatory calling your name. Don't sleep on booking their African healing rituals, from massages to bath soaks.

  • Swimming pools: Family fun in the central heated infinity pool or a quieter option near the garden cottages for those over the age of 16.

  • Tennis courts: These were popping during my stay as resident coach, Barkie McKrea, doled out lessons to players of all skill levels.

  • Work out: Complimentary outdoor yoga and bootcamp sessions are offered daily. There's also a fFull-service 24-hour gym.

Dining highlights

  • "Tea at the Nellie" is a beloved Cape Town tradition that pulls in locals and visitors alike. Experience the work of South African's first expertly trained tea sommelier paired with a curated pastry menu.

  • The legendary buffet breakfast: This is an included perk of your stay — in the dreamy scalloped umbrella-adorned "Oasis."

  • The Planet Bar for the perfect chic and cozy people-watching spot, always buzzing with well-heeled locals.

  • The Verandah for a three-course evening meal with a seasonal menu that changes every two weeks.

Who should stay here?

Everyone. Secluded accommodation options are romantic and private for honeymoon couples. A kids club for those between the ages of four and 12 years old, as well as multiple connecting room options, make this a great spot for families. Meeting and event facilities are great for business travelers, groups and corporate retreats.

Need to know

A stay at this classic beauty offers a peaceful and private experience with attractions just an easy drive away. The hotel offers a shuttle service, taxis are easily arranged and Uber is safe and reliable. Tour operators offer pick-up services for day trips and excursions.

If you're looking for a walkable location that's closer to the hustle and bustle, consider the design-forward Silo Hotel, situated above the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCCA). Or check out the luxurious One&Only Cape Town, located in the heart of this magical city at the V&A Waterfront; it has the coveted One & Only Spa and some of the most spacious rooms in the city.

Both of these choices offer special perks when booking through a Fora travel advisor.
