I recently had the opportunity to visit Capella Ubud while I was in Bali, and it was truly a magical experience. The architect, Bill Bensley, has created a dramatic and luxurious space that feels completely integrated with the surrounding rainforest. The tented accommodations are like stepping back in time to a bygone era of exploration, but with all the modern comforts you could ask for. If you're looking for a unique and unforgettable stay in Ubud, Capella Ubud is definitely worth considering.

Property overview

Capella Ubud nestles amid a dramatic terraced landscape, enveloped by the lush embrace of the rainforest and the gentle murmur of the sacred Wos River. The resort is built into the natural landscape and no trees were torn down to create Capella Ubud.

Created by American architect Bill Bensley, the design was inspired by early European settlers. Capella Ubud is a tented camp that comprises 23 treehouses, 22 one-bedroom tents and one two-bedroom lodge, all with private pools. The camp is adorned with hand-picked antique artifacts, books, paintings, drawings and furniture. It evokes a visceral memory of times past.

Dining options

There are a variety of dining options at Capella Ubud. From fresh hand-harvested ingredients to nighttime s’mores by the campfire.

Mads Lange, is the primary restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The main dining area for the hotel serves the freshest, hand-harvested ingredients from the region.

Api Jiwa, is an omakase-inspired open-air restaurant. You can watch the magic happen at the chef’s counter or have a seat at one of the tables. The restaurant is thoughtfully designed and includes unique touches like antique iron and clothes hidden in the walls.

I have friends who ate there years ago and still remember every detail of their meals, saying Api Jiwa was the best meal of their trip.

Mortar & Pestle offers light and health-conscious snacks and a wide range of cocktails.. All drinks are made using traditional methods, including manually crushing ice and using a mortar & pestle.

The Officer’s Tent serves as the main gathering place for camp residents. Afternoon tea and evening cocktails and canapés are served here. A billiard table and board games are available for the guests.

The Campfire is an outdoor space designed for residents to enjoy movies under the stars. Drinks and s’more supplies are abundant.

Wellness

The Armory is the camp's tented workout facility. The facility includes state-of-the-art workout equipment, free weights and TRX stations.

The Cistern is the 120-square-meter outdoor rainforest pool. It’s located in the center of the camp. The cistern is very cool. It’s completely made out of metal and is the renovated hull of a ship.

Auriga Wellness, housed in a collection of luxurious tents, offers a variety of spa treatments influenced by the lunar cycles and steeped in Balinese and Hindu traditions. The products used are a signature, organic product made exclusively for Capella Ubud.

Getting there

The hotel is located 29.8 miles from Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS). I’d recommend hiring a driver from the hotel to pick you up. The drive is about 45 minutes with traffic.

Return airport transfers are complimentary for stays of three nights or more.

Room types & categories

There are 22 one-bedroom tents and one two-bedroom tent. The one-bedroom tents consist of five tent categories that offer distinctively enriching and unique experiences:

  • Five Terrace Tents located near the camp center and the paddy fields, with a view of the rainforest.

  • Four Rainforest Tents offering a rainforest setting and view.

  • Eight River Tents offering a tranquil Wos river experience. Secluded on a gradient in close proximity to the Wos river, this tent is best suited to the curious and able traveler.

  • Five Keliki Valley Tents offering the Keliki valley view and the largest pools.

  • One two-bedroom tented lodge best suited for families or a group of friends traveling together.

All guests have access to “The Officer’s Tent” living room, where they can enjoy the tailored service of a Capella Culturist 24 hours a day. The "Living Room'' is the heart of the camp, where you will plan your activities for the day in the morning and enjoy a beverage at Mad’s Spirit Box in the evening.

I toured a one-bedroom rainforest tent. The room is accessed via a rope bridge. The room is large and airy with hand-made furnishings and unique touches throughout. The mini-bar is inside an old steamer trunk, the phone is in the style of an antique rotary phone and the toilet is built into a hand-carved throne. There is a stand-alone copper tub and indoor & outdoor showers. The bathroom was the most unique I’ve ever seen.
