Curator’s statement
Chicago might not be the first place you think of for a luxury getaway. As a local, I may be a bit biased, but if you love great food and fabulous five-star luxury hotels, you need to get here. Did I mention that it’s an easy flight from just about anywhere in the US? Yes, winters can be cold, but with these hotels you don’t need to go anywhere but down to the spa. There are so many amazing five star hotels in Chicago that it was a challenge to pick my top 5, but here they are! Weekend away, planned.

The Peninsula Chicago
Chicago's most acclaimed 5-star hotel, the Peninsula proves itself every time. This hotel is classic luxury, but there’s nothing old or stuffy about it. The rooms all have full tech integration and 3 tablets to control it all. You never need to pick up the phone, or get out of bed to turn off a light. The service was flawless. Room design misses no detail. There’s a spacious dressing area and a lighted makeup mirror in an area with natural light. There are quite a few wow suites in Chicago, but the Peninsula’s is jaw-dropping (see the private terrace and standalone office photos!).
Enjoy afternoon tea in the lobby restaurant and head to Shanghai Terrace to enjoy some of the city’s best Asian fare. If you’re here in our warmer months, sitting out on the gorgeous terrace is a must.
The family-friendly indoor pool has soaring ceilings and enormous windows. With the adjacent terrace you can enjoy this gem year round. The spa is the best in the city, though you should probably try them all to make sure.
The Langham Chicago
Located in the architectural landmark IBM building along the Chicago River, The Langham has perhaps the best location of all the five star hotels to enjoy fine dining in the West Loop. It’s also a quick flight of stairs from the Riverwalk, a series of restaurants and bars with outdoor dining along the river - a perfect spot to enjoy Chicago’s City Winery or craft beers.
You can also enjoy afternoon tea in the Pavilion, but the Travelle Lounge is the lively place for guests and locals alike.
The art throughout the Langham differs by floor and is worth exploring. Be sure to look for the Anish Kapoor (Cloud Gate / “the bean” artist) pieces in the spa. Speaking of the spa, this is one that could just rival the Peninsula’s. There are four experiences available to all guests within the locker rooms and a nice pool area to relax in.
The Park Hyatt Chicago
After their 2022 renovation, the Park Hyatt is light and bright, and takes advantage of its singular views. The Park Hyatt overlooks the historic Water Tower on Michigan Avenue’s Magnificent Mile. Get a lake view room and park yourself on the window seat. There’s even an outlet there so you can make that your work space.
Park Hyatt’s NoMI restaurant is a win for everyone with creative American fare plus an outstanding sushi bar. The 7th floor garden terrace overlooking the Magnificent Mile is the kind of place you never want to leave, so go ahead and order another round.
The Park Hyatt also caters to its younger clients. If you’re here to visit the American Girl store, be sure to let your advisor know, and you’ll probably find a spot prepared for the doll to sleep too.
The Four Seasons
The Four Seasons is friendly luxury at its finest and if you’re shopping in Chicago this is a perfect location. The Four Seasons elevator is connected to the 900 North Michigan building so you can shop without ever going outside. It’s also a convenient spot to grab a quick bite for lunch, but you should definitely eat breakfast at Adorn, the Four Seasons restaurant.
You’re also steps away from Oak Street Beach, or the concierge will be happy to help get you out on a boat to enjoy beautiful Lake Michigan. The pool here is bright and beautiful, so don’t despair if you’ve missed summer in Chicago.
The St Regis
Brand new in 2023, the St Regis is the latest striking addition to the Chicago skyline. Yes - it’s finished - those open air floors are to minimize the amount of high rise sway. The rooms have fabulous downtown views of the lake and river from the floor to ceiling windows.
The wellness floor with its pool and fitness center is bright and beautiful. The spa includes a lounge, sundeck and bar - the St Regis is the newest rival for Chicago’s spa crown.
The restaurant Miru has opened to rave reviews. While this hotel is still getting its services and additional restaurants in order, I expect this to be one of the top five star hotels in Chicago.
