Curator’s statement
Sometimes, it’s all about spending meaningful time together. When we planned a cruise with Rose, my wonderful 91-year-old mother-in-law, our priority was her. The destinations were secondary — the cruise line, however, was paramount. We chose Regent Seven Seas and their newest ship, Grandeur. It was perfect! Given Rose’s age, we needed a setting that was easy for her to navigate but also rich with inspiration. We wanted beautiful spaces for gathering, diverse dining options to spark conversation and unforgettable flavors to indulge in. Grandeur exceeded every expectation, creating the perfect backdrop for treasured moments.
We are lucky to live 15 minutes from the Miami Cruise Terminal, so our Miami to Miami cruise required no flights. If you do need to fly into Miami, take a couple of days and just relax. Enjoy a few great meals (Il Gabbiano, Osaka or Uchi), and maybe take a super-close tour or two (Vizcaya Museum and Garden, Wynwood Graffiti by golf cart or Mizner’s Dream Boat Tour), so you can adjust to the time zone and really enjoy yourself!
Aside from optional upgrades like ultra-premium wine or exclusive excursions, what you pay when you book is exactly what you'll pay when you disembark — no hidden costs, no surprises. On Grandeur, the gyms are great: the equipment is top of the line and the classes are small and refined. The spa areas (which are open to every guest) are wonderful and include ice and heat rooms, jacuzzi and relaxation areas. When John and I planned excursions that were too demanding for Rose, she opted for a massage and facial at the spa. The attentive staff not only ensured her comfort but also escorted her to a designated lunch spot or back to her room afterward. That’s just how Regent operates — making everything seamless and effortless.
Rose has a morning routine and likes to surface about noon for lunch. Great! On the ship, they delivered her breakfast at 9:45 am. At noon we would meet her for an amazing lunch, sit by the pool, browse the spectacular library, take bridge lessons, play trivia, drink virgin (or not) pina coladas and talk a lot. As we relaxed, our rooms were cleaned, our clothes were washed and we were offered food and drink without pause. Staff, entertainment crew and other guests would say hi and chat with each other. Just another day on a perfectly run ship.
When the focus of the trip is sharing time together, the cuisine and ambiance matter. How Regent delivers such incredible food, night after night, is beyond belief. Customizing a vegetarian menu provides many options. You are guaranteed one sitting in each of the three specialty restaurants on a 7-day cruise: Pacific Rim, Prime Seven and Chartreuse.
Pacific Rim is wildly delicious Pan-Asian fare. Just order what you want — they portion and present course after course and it is spectacular!! Think crispy soft-shell crab, peking duck and watermelon salad, duck confit spring rolls and dim sum.
Prime 7’s entrance, marked by an impressive bull head sculpture, sets the tone for its chic, retro train-car-inspired interior. While the perfectly prepared steaks and seafood steal the show, the side dishes and impeccable service are just as remarkable.
Chartreuse offers an authentic taste of classic French cuisine in an elegant setting. The service is impeccable, and it was fun seeing staff from other Regent cruises we had enjoyed.
The additional dining options, with open seating, are equally excellent. Compass Rose is stunning with beautiful lighting, Versace dinnerware, comfortable seating, extensive food choices and great service. Other dining areas on the ship abound. Specialty drinks are always available and seating abundant.
Finally, the entertainment was awesome. There were shows every night at 9:15 in the main theater, with music found in different niches around the ship throughout the evening. The talent is impressive!
Need to know
If you have a “Rose” in your life, I cannot recommend a luxury cruise experience enough. It is like being at a 5-star hotel without getting in a car or spending time and energy navigating different locations. You can enjoy exquisite dining, fantastic shows, engage in lots of hobbies and interests and customize the trip in any way you like. Plus, you get to wake up each day in a new location!
