Site Inspection at The Ameswell Hotel in Mountain View, California
Curator’s statement

In August 2023, I did a site inspection at The Ameswell Hotel in Mountain View, CA, in the heart of Silicon Valley. The sustainable hotel is aviation-themed and is brand new with a modern and sleek look. The staff were incredibly friendly and the food was delicious within the property. I would stay here and highly recommend to anyone visiting the Bay Area, CA.

Where to stay

The Ameswell Hotel is a new hotel that was built from the ground up in the heart of Silicon Valley, nearby Meta, Google, Apple and Facebook headquarters. Opened in 2021 during the pandemic, this is frequented by travelers and those in the tech world. Not far from Moffett Field and NASA Ames Research Center, the hotel is reminiscent of a hangar. The “Roger” Bar is named after the phrase that pilots say, and the lighting and paint scheme walking down the hallways are the colors you would see when taking off into space.

The hotel has plenty of space for events, weddings, and after a quick tour around the property, it goes without saying that the hotel rooms are spacious and there are places to lounge outdoors.

This is a modern luxury hotel that has wellness rooms and focuses on sustainability. The hotel engages with the community and hosts many local activities. This is a perfect stay for anyone visiting the Bay Area looking for staycations or wellness hotels, searching for a wedding venue or planning events. It’s apparent when stepping into the hotel that this is a tech hotel. Checking in can be completed through a chatbot named Ava, who can contact the guest throughout the stay for any questions or for a check-out time reminder. There is as much or as little interaction with the staff as one would like.

Hotel Lobby
Meeting room

My first impression was the warm lighting, wooden fixtures, and artwork around the hotel. Ameswell hotel definitely has a lot of character with a luxurious and modern feel. This hotel focuses on sustainability and wellness. For wellness, complimentary yoga is available to all guests and there are options to book wellness rooms. For sustainability, the pool is saltwater; 96% of products in the hotel are biodegradable and compostable; solar panels power the hotel, drought resistance and refill bottles are provided for each guest and there are refill stations throughout the hotel.

Rooms/Event Space

There are several different room types, such as Premium, Wellness, Superior, Deluxe, and Suites. There are 256 total rooms, which include 72 double, 11 suites of various sizes, and 173 single rooms. Wellness rooms have Lululemon Studio Mirrors and weight equipment within the room. The Ameswell Suite is the largest of the suites and popular for wedding parties at 955 sq feet, as large as a studio apartment. The room is designed so that there is a room within a room and it can also connect to a conjoining room.

Each room has Ameswell-branded amenities with organic conditioners, shampoos, and lotions from Juice Beauty. Each room has all expected amenities, such as a bath robe, hairdryer, refrigerator, kettle, work-station, Santa Cruz individual drip coffee, and tea. Amenities like toothbrushes and combs are available upon request.

There are plenty of meeting spaces and places lounge within the hotel. The spacious ballroom can be split into three different sections. This is popular for tech events and weddings. There is also the Discovery Boardroom and Curiosity Breakout Room to use for meeting space. To lounge, guests can check out the comfy Ames Library and spacious lobby.

Event Space

Events can be booked at the beer garden and outdoor areas. Larger and longer events cost more, of course, and even larger events need city approval due to the noise. Food and beverage will cost a 23 percent service fee.

The gym is equipped with everything you need. The high-tech qualities are apparent in the hotel. Pelotons, Aviron rowing machines, treadmills, and a variety of free weights. Pelotons and Avirons are not common household exercise equipment, so it would be a miss not to try them out. The gym gets busiest in the mornings.

Guests are able to book massages and treatments with the Rejuv Spa. It is not a full spa, so they use a room in the hotel. The massage table is heated.

Restaurants and Room Service

On the property, the main food spots are also aviation themed. Dining options include Roger Bar & Restaurant, the Fly-By, and an outdoor beer garden/game lawn that serves drinks and small bites for happy hour. The Roger Bar & Restaurant has delicious American fare and drink. Happy hour is served daily. The Fly-By serves coffee, breakfast items, brunch, and baked goods from a local bakery called Manresa. From Friday-Saturday and not limited to hotel guests, there are drinks and small bites served with the option to site outside at the fire pits.

There is no room-service at this time. Guests can use an app to order food ahead from Roger Restaurant & Bar and the Fly-By.

Rooms are noise-proof, thanks to the triple-pane windows, and most rooms have a pool view. The stairways are well-lit with windows and open lighting.

Things to do nearby

Castro Street in Downtown Mountain View is a short drive away from the hotel and has plenty of restaurants. The hotel has walking trails outside, and Stevens Creek Trail is accessible from here. Other activities nearby the hotel include Hakone Gardens, Mountain Winery, Shoreline Ampitheatre, Filoli Gardens, and the Winchester Mystery House. For shopping, there is Santana Row and the Westfield Mall in San Jose or the Gilroy Outlets.
