There's so much to recommend in Portugal. But, if you want to see some beautiful scenery, eat incredible food and enjoy some luxurious sunshine, I recommend finding a hotel in the central area of Algarve, like the W Algarve in Albufeira.

It's quite easy to take the train from Lisbon to Albufeira, and then grab an Uber at the train station for your hotel. The W Algarve is a newer hotel in the area, which is so central to other areas like Carvoeiro and Faro. There is incredible food at this hotel. Starting from Paper Moon for Italian food, and then Evaristo, where you can literally pick out your fish, which is then prepared right in front of you. It's the freshest fish you could imagine, with an unbelievable view of the ocean. I recommend trying to get a hotel at sunset if possible.

The pool and beach at W Algarve are large enough and picturesque enough to spend the entire afternoon after you finish a delicious buffet breakfast. But, if you are looking for activity outside the hotel, I recommend taking a tour of the Benagil cave. I recommend Tridente Boat Trips, which has several options for great tours. I also highly recommend doing the hike known as the "Seven Hanging Valleys Trail". I wanted to take photos of the beach and rocks at every turn. Each vista seemed more beautiful than the next!

If you are looking for a splurge meal, make a reservation at Vila Joya, a 2-Michelin star restaurant in Albufeira. The location is unparalleled, with an amazing view of the ocean and a great place to enjoy drinks at sunset. Every course is incredibly fresh, flavorful, unique and beautiful to see. The staff is attentive and meticulous without being too much. Super highly recommended!

Need to know

If you want to do the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail hike, go early. It gets crowded and warm fairly quickly on the trail. You can always relax at the pool afterward!
