Curator’s statement
Being based in San Francisco, I feel incredibly fortunate to have easy access to wine country, especially Sonoma. It’s close enough for a quick day trip but also makes for a perfect short getaway.

What I love most about Sonoma is its relaxed and unpretentious vibe. Many wineries here are family-owned, allowing for personal interactions with the owners and staff. Plus, it’s generally a more cost-effective trip than Napa, with lower hotel rates and wine-tasting fees. Sonoma is home to hidden gems and smaller boutique wineries that offer unique tastings away from the crowds. If you're considering a trip to this beautiful region, here’s a list of hotels you should definitely check out:
Lodge at Sonoma
The Lodge at Sonoma is a luxury resort located about a mile south of Mission San Francisco Solano — the last mission built in California. This hotel focuses on honoring the history and culture of its location through intentional design choices. The artwork featured throughout the property pays homage to the indigenous peoples of the region, and all bathroom products are locally sourced. Guests can choose from various room types, including lodge rooms, cottage accommodations and specialty suites. The hotel also features a spa, outdoor pool and fitness center.
MacArthur Place
MacArthur Place is a luxury hotel and spa located on a picturesque 5-acre estate in the heart of Sonoma, a 15-minute walk from the main plaza. Originally founded as a family estate over 100 years ago, this hotel offers 64 rooms and suites, many featuring private porches and outdoor showers. Guests can enjoy several dining options, including Layla, a full-service restaurant. a relaxed coffee bar & marketplace with grab-and-go options — and the Bar at MacArthur Place, which serves craft beer and classic American cocktails. Additional amenities include a 24-hour fitness center, an outdoor pool and complimentary bicycles. The Spa at MacArthur offers unique experiences like the Farm-to-Massage Table Concept, all while maintaining its historic character alongside modern luxury.
El Dorado Hotel
El Dorado Hotel is a charming boutique hotel situated right on Sonoma Plaza, the historic center of town. Recently renovated to blend bohemian charm with modern finishes, this hotel has 27 rooms in total — each equipped with a small balcony. The on-site restaurant offers California-inspired cuisine with an emphasis on fresh, farm-to-table ingredients. This hotel is ideal for travelers looking to be in the heart of town without expecting a resort experience.
Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa
The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa is a luxurious resort situated atop an ancient thermal mineral spring, which means all of its pools are filled with geothermal-fed mineral water. This expansive property features just over 200 rooms, offering a range of accommodations from standard rooms to specialty suites. Dining options include Santé, a fine-dining restaurant with a seasonally inspired menu and an extensive wine list featuring local selections. At the heart of the resort is the spa experience, where guests can enjoy signature treatments and unique bathing rituals in mineral baths and steam rooms. Guests also have access to championship golf at the neighboring Sonoma Golf Club.
Need to know
While Napa is renowned for its Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma boasts a wider variety of wines, including exceptional Pinot Noir and Zinfandel.
