I just returned from Vienna, where I spent an incredible week at the 2025 ASTA River Cruise Expo. First, Vienna was the perfect backdrop for this event – the city itself is a major embarkation point for Danube cruises. The classical elegance of Vienna really sets the tone for the kind of refined experiences our river cruise clients are seeking. I found myself constantly thinking of clients who would fall in love with the classical architecture and café culture before even stepping foot on their ships. And without a doubt, the most valuable were the networking opportunities during the dinners and receptions where I connected with cruise line executives and fellow advisors. The expo featured all the major luxury river cruise operators, the representatives from each were actively involved in showcasing unique features of their vessels. I was amazed how different these river cruise experiences actually are from one another. From the outside, river ships might look similar, but the onboard atmosphere, excursion philosophy, and inclusions vary significantly.

Here's a rundown of each participating ship, focusing on their specialties and what they showcased during the event:
AMADEUS Nova: This ship really stood out with its modern luxury vibe and eco-friendly features. It was great to see how AMADEUS blended sustainability with elegant design, making it a perfect fit for the river landscapes.
AmaWaterways (AmaBella, AmaLea, AmaMagna, AmaSonata): AmaWaterways brought a diverse fleet to the table, with the AmaMagna being a real showstopper as the widest ship on the Danube. They highlighted their spacious accommodations, wellness programs, and gourmet dining experiences, which really impressed attendees.
Avalon Waterways (Illumination, Passion, Impression): Avalon's ships were all about "relaxed luxury," with those amazing Panorama Suites that turn into Open-Air Balconies. It was fantastic to see how they focus on immersive shore excursions and offer a laid-back, yet luxurious, experience.
Riverside Luxury Cruises (Mozart): The Mozart showcased Riverside's commitment to ultra-luxury river cruising with its opulent suites and expansive public spaces. It was clear they're aiming high in the luxury market.
Riviera River Cruises (MS William Wordsworth): Riviera brought a touch of British charm with a focus on value and quality. The MS William Wordsworth impressed with its elegant interiors and Riviera's signature excursion program.
Scenic Group (Scenic Opal and Emerald Luna): Scenic and Emerald Cruises highlighted their all-inclusive luxury approach and contemporary style. It was great to see features like Scenic's Sun
Lounge balconies and Emerald's indoor pool that doubles as a cinema.
Tauck (MS Savor): Tauck's MS Savor was all about culturally immersive river cruises with an all-
inclusive twist. Advisors loved the onboard lectures, entertainment, and exclusive shore excursions that
Tauck is known for.
Uniworld (S.S. Maria Theresa): This ship was a real treat with its lavish décor inspired by 18th-century Europe. Attendees were wowed by the ornate furnishings, farm-to-table cuisine, and personalized service that Uniworld is famous for.
Viking (Rinda and Ingvi): Viking's longships showcased their Scandinavian design and focus on destination-centric cruising. Advisors appreciated the cultural enrichment programs and the ships' modern, streamlined interiors.

Education sessions
The education sessions were among the most valuable parts of the expo, offering practical insights without the typical product knowledge overload. Here are some key takeaways:
Luxury River Cruise Market Trends and the post-pandemic shift toward intimate, immersive travel has made river cruising more appealing than ever. Focus on clients who would appreciate this style of travel but haven't considered river cruising yet.
Great mode of travel for Multi-Generational Families, a growing river cruise demographic.
Culinary Excellence on Rivers, one of the major selling points for our foodie clients. I was particularly impressed by the regional wine offerings that showed how each line approaches local gastronomy differently.
Pre/Post cruise Extensions provide a great opportunity to enhance clients' experience and contribute to our book of business.

Need to know
Who should attend:
I would absolutely recommend this event to anyone who:
Works with luxury travelers looking for new experiences.
Wants to confidently match clients to the right river cruise line.
Has clients interested in European cultural experiences.
Is looking to build stronger industry relationships and expand their network of contacts.
In conclusion, The ASTA River Cruise Expo is the perfect way to get hands-on with European river cruising — you actually stay on the ships, eat the food and really experience what your clients will experience. I loved being able to wander through each vessel, notebook in hand, picking up all those little details you can't get from brochures. ASTA River Cruise Expo will return to the Rhine River in 2026 (March 11–15) as it heads to Amsterdam. Registration is now open, with three levels: General Admission, General Admission Plus+ and VIP Admission.
