Family Spring Break Adventure in Hawai'i
Curator’s statement

Our family trip to Hawai'i for spring break was a heartfelt journey of rediscovery and connection. With a personal connection to the islands through my Filipino heritage, it felt like coming home to a place where the culture, food, and surroundings spoke directly to me. This trip was about making memories that would last a lifetime for my teenage son, ensuring he experienced the magic of Hawai'i just as I had. From exploring the lush trails and engaging in whale watching, to savoring the local cuisine and experiencing the rich cultural heritage at the Polynesian Cultural Center, every moment was crafted to leave a lasting impression.

Our spring break adventure commenced with a direct flight from Washington, D.C., to Honolulu, embracing the long but worthwhile journey to the islands. Staying at the Marriott Waikiki Resort provided us with luxury and convenience, and it was strategically positioned to avoid the hustle and bustle of central Waikiki. Our trip was meticulously planned, yet flexible, allowing for spontaneous discoveries and experiences.

We embraced the outdoors with hikes, such as the Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail, and sought unique culinary delights, such as malasadas (Portuguese style fried doughnut, which have become popularized in Hawai'i) at Leonard's Bakery to fresh seafood at Nico's Pier 38. A memorable whale-watching tour offered us a glimpse into Hawai'i's marine life, while a visit to Pearl Harbor connected us with a pivotal moment in history.

Celebrating my birthday in Hawai'i was a highlight, complete with a relaxing massage, a chance encounter celebrities, and the humorous adventure of my family's kayaking excursion. The trip had learning moments, such as securing belongings during water activities.

Exploring the North Shore contrasted the vibrant energy of Waikiki with visits to Kualoa Ranch for an immersive film location tour, and the Polynesian Cultural Center for a deep dive into the islands' cultures. The simple joys of driving through the island, stopping for Dole Whip at the Dole Plantation, and savoring shaved ice from Matsumoto's underscored the diverse experiences Hawai'i offers.

Need to know

Plan for Jet Lag: Resist the urge to nap immediately upon arrival. Engaging in outdoor activities can help adjust your body clock.
Respect Local Customs: Be mindful of Hawai'i's efforts to protect its ecosystem, especially when filling out customs forms upon landing.
Sun Protection is Crucial: Rely on sunscreen on cloudy days or during water activities to avoid sunburn.
Cultural and Historical Sites: Planning is essential for visiting popular sites like Pearl Harbor.
Local Cuisine: Embrace the local flavors, from traditional Hawai'ian dishes to the unique blend of cultural influences in the islands' cuisine.
