Curator’s statement
in February 2024, I was lucky enough to stay at Dromoland Castle with a friend. While I had high expectations for this 500-acre luxury property, I was amazed at how far above and beyond the team at Dromoland went to make our time memorable. The service highlights might include the nightly turn down service, the elaborate and delicious breakfast (both a buffet and hot dishes were available) and the complimentary shuttle that seemed to appear whenever we might need it. The quality of the service was matched only by the property itself. The rooms were luxuriously appointed, the common areas were lavish but welcoming and the original grandeur of the castle was beautifully upheld.

Location: Dromoland Castle is only eight miles from Shannon airport, or about a two-and-a-half hour drive from Dublin. While Dromoland is a destination in and of itself, the castle is also near Irish highlights like the Cliffs of Moher, the Aran Islands, Galway City and many quaint villages. Side note: Did you know there is a strong surfing culture on the West coast of Ireland? Dromoland would be a great place for that, too!
Accommodations: There are a variety of different types of rooms at Dromoland, and all of them are exceptional. I stayed in the entry-level room, the Queen Anne Classic. Being it was recently renovated, the space was spotless with large bathrooms full of local bath products and a small seating area.
The Deluxe Rooms feature either two double beds or one king bed. They were slightly larger and had stunning views of the lake.
The staterooms vary in size, but each one is much bigger than the Queen Anne or Deluxe Rooms (at least 44 sq mt.) These rooms are in the original part of the castle and feel more stately and authentic.
Again, the suites vary in size, but all are at least 52 sq. mt. The suite I saw (Thomond Suite), had a sitting area on the first floor and a bedroom and bathroom on the second floor. It felt like its own little apartment within the castle.
Experience: With a range of restaurants, spa, fitness area with pool, golf course, afternoon tea service, stunning walking paths, clay shooting and archery (to name only a few!) it’s hard to find a reason to leave the castle grounds. During high season, there are more outdoor activities: SUP, tennis, cycling, fishing and activities for children.
My friend and I scheduled falconry for our visit, an hour-long activity during which we met multiple birds (hawks, falcons, and owls) and learned about this 5,000+ year-old art form. Truly a unique experience and one I would wholeheartedly recommend.
I wish we had more time to enjoy the castle grounds. The minute we arrived, I was already planning to return. Although we were there in February (the rainy off-season), the outdoor property was stunning. Inside, the variety of seating areas were perfectly peaceful, elegant and comfortable. I could have spent an entire day reading in one of those plush armchairs.
From Dromoland, we took a private car through the nearby villages and up to the Cliffs of Moher. After a two-hour hike and a stop in the visitor center (where they had warm mulled wine and exceptional pastries!), we continued up to Galway City. We spent some time in the Latin Quarter, a pedestrian-only area filled with bookstores, chocolate shops, street performers (Ed Sheeran got his start on these street corners!) and pubs. The atmosphere was lively, and the entire area was ideal for people-watching.
Dining: I will admit, I wasn’t sure if my friend and I would find many vegetarian or vegan-friendly options at the castle. We were both shocked at how easy (and delicious) it was to stay plant-based during our stay! The curry at Fig Tree was divine, and the breakfast Shakshuka with tofu was a lovely way to start the day. There were several non-dairy milk options for coffee, an abundance of fresh fruit to choose from and the entire staff was waiting to assist should any questions arise.
Although some restaurants are labeled “casual”, I would say they all felt upscale. Many guests took the opportunity to dress for dinner, and even the most casual Gallery dinner felt refined and special.
