Couple's Weekend at Getaway House
Curator’s statement

My husband and I spent some time at Getaway Eastern Catskills over a weekend in April. We spent our time gazing at the moon and stars through the large cabin window and exploring the Catskills area. There is so much beauty to be appreciated among the mountains and wooded areas. I hope to visit other Getaway cabins across the U.S. and highly recommend it to my clients as well!

Embarking on a journey from the bustling streets of New York City to the serene retreat of our Kaleigh cabin in the Catskills was like stepping into a whole new world. The cabin looked just as inviting in person as it did in all those dreamy social media posts. Inside, it had everything we needed for a cozy stay, though some may miss having a mirror for their makeup routine. But hey, going makeup-free for a few days isn't the end of the world, right? The temperature inside the cabin was perfect and easy to adjust if needed. However, the bathroom felt a little chillier than the rest of the space.

We didn't just hole up in the cabin, as we were itching to explore the area. Our first stop was Last Chance Antiques & Cheese Café - a total blast from the past with its retro vibes and comfort food. Then it was back to the cabin for some card games and wine, which was a perfect end to the day.

The rest of the weekend was a blur of good food and outdoor adventures. We visited a charming, country grocery store called Circle W Market, where we had some delicious brunch sandwiches. The store sells a variety of products, including local jams, honey and syrup. You can also find unique, organic brands like Stumptown Cold Brews and Talea beer. If you didn't have time to go to a supermarket before reaching the cabin, you could find what you need here or at the nearby Hannaford.

Breakfast is only served until 11am, so it's important to note that. However, we didn't miss breakfast foods, because the sandwiches we had were fantastic. After enjoying our sandwiches, we drove to Mountain Top Arboretum, which has a variety of trails open daily. We walked along the trails and enjoyed the scenery. Although it was April and the trees were a bit bare, we could only imagine how beautiful they'd be in the summer or fall!

Back at the cabin, we seasoned some steak for our upcoming firepit cooking. After a short nap, we headed over to Subversive Malting & Brewing. Their menu had a variety of brews and food, including plant-based burgers that cater to different dietary needs. Seating was available indoors and under a tent outside. We returned to the cabin to get the fire going and get dinner on the table. Although we were a bit new to the practice of cooking over an open fire, it was a labor of love, and so worth it! We enjoyed our grilled food with wine in our mugs under the moon and string lights. After dinner came dessert, courtesy of the s'mores add-on from Getaway. All of the ingredients for two s'mores per person (just the right amount!) were included in our stay.

It was time for us to check out the following morning. We cleaned up the cabin and headed to Gracie's Luncheonette for brunch before leaving. This charming farmhouse-style eatery offers freshly made doughnuts, which you can enjoy with your meal or take them to go. I was also pleased to find out that I could add avocado to my platter at no additional cost! It was a fantastic weekend getaway, and we returned to the city feeling relaxed and grateful for the opportunity to stay in a Getaway house.

Need to know

If you're seeking to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and want to reconnect with yourself or your loved ones, then I highly recommend spending time at a Getaway House. The cozy cabin, cooking over a fire, and being immersed in nature provide you with the opportunity to truly unwind and be present. Take some time to indulge in nature - it is genuinely revitalizing.
