Curator’s statement
Lisbon is a must-see city in Portugal. With its rich history and diverse food scene, it's certainly worth a visit. However, Portugal has so much more to offer outside the walls of the city. Lisbon itself is a truly vibrant and captivating city. Day trips from Lisbon are an excellent way to experience the rugged coastal landscapes and rich history of Portugal.

Whether you're hiking down to the secret beach of Praia da Ursa, exploring the charming streets of Sintra or experiencing the massive waves of Nazare, these day trips allow you to immerse yourself in the country's culture, nature and history. Plus, the convenience of transportation like bus tours and self-drive options, makes it easy to enhance your Lisbon visit with fresh adventure and unforgettable memories.

This day trip from Lisbon includes two gorgeous hiking destinations mere steps from each other. Ursa Beach and Cabo da Roca provide an adventurous and scenic experience. Dramatic cliffs and secluded beaches are perfect for an intermediate hike or a dream backdrop for photos. The journey is about a one-hour drive from Lisbon, but there are a few spots you can stop along the way if you wish. First, Torre de Belém, a historic fortress located along the Tagus River. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site offering a glimpse into Portugal’s Age of Exploration. Next, continue to Boca do Inferno, a dramatic chasm where the ocean crashes into the cliffs, an ideal spot for taking in the raw power of nature. Continue your journey to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, with its iconic lighthouse, where you’ll have sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. If you’re feeling adventurous, hike down to Ursa Beach, a quick journey north, and take in the spectacularly pointed rock face in the ocean off the beach. Beware, this hike is not for the faint of heart and at points requires a rope to scale down at a bit more than a 45 degree angle. But trust me, the views are worth it!

Sintra is another quick drive from the coast and Cabo da Roca, with only about 25 minutes to Garagem Cafe. This is a charming stop for a quick coffee or to refuel on your way back to Lisbon. I highly recommend ordering an espresso or crisp glass of Portuguese white wine with the delightful salmon or burrata salad. Next, head up the street to find more quaint restaurants and markets with fresh fruits & veggies and walk along the cobblestone streets. Sintra is an underrated escape, with hilltop palaces and uniquely colorful architecture and is known for its yellow and red Pena Palace. Another great landmark located in Sintra, offering panoramic views of the surrounding area.

If you're seeking something slightly further from Lisbon, head to Obidos, about 1.5 hours away. There are full-day bus tours from Lisbon that offer a worry-free way to get around if you only have a short amount of time. Obidos is a tiny city, a true hidden gem in the countryside of Portugal. With its white and royal blue house hues, bright magenta florals and the impressive Óbidos Castle, it's a great stop en route to Nazare. Don’t forget to try the town’s signature drink, Ginja de Óbidos, a cherry liqueur often served in a chocolate cup (they have this in Lisbon as well). Nazaré is the next stop, which offers a coastal paradise, known for its massive waves and vibrant fishing culture. There are plenty of street vendors and local coffee shops to stop in for a coffee or keepsake. The locals are lovely and the lookout point is unbeatable. The iconic surf waves can get up to 100 feet in high seasons between the months of October and March. There are big-wave surfing tournaments, sure to excite and draw larger crowds. For a more relaxed beach experience, however, visit during the Spring (around April & May) or Summer when the weather is at its prime.

All of these day trips provide the perfect mix of nature, adventure and off-the-beaten-path allure. This allows you to venture beyond the typical tourist spots and discover new and charming places close to Lisbon that you’ll want to tell everyone about.
Need to know
A rental car is a great option for both solo travelers and families, as it gives you the freedom to come and go when you please. It also offers you the ability to explore underrated places along the coastline or stop at what could be your new favorite restaurant for lunch. You can pick one up from Drivalia, Portugal. They are amazing and even upgraded us to a luxury sedan!
