Hot Springs Resort Trip Report: Ojo Caliente
Curator’s statement

Taos is renowned for world-class skiing and unique pueblo architecture. But I was just as excited about another luxurious feature located a short drive outside town - the natural spring pools at Ojo Caliente Spa and Resort. Pulling up to Ojo Caliente in February 2023, the burgundy rock cliffs rising above you become hazy as the thermal pools steam upward into the fresh air and it feels undeniable you are about to have a magical experience. The resort features multiple soaking pools under a grove of cottonwood trees, as well as a variety of spa amenities that put my in the ultimate stress-free mood.

Where to stay

Guests can stay in an upscale lodge setting, with windows facing either the red rocks or the pools; no bad views in the joint. Two private houses are available for rent as well, with living rooms and kitchenettes attached for a full-service stay. Day guests and overnight guests have use of the pools. The main activity to enjoy is indoor and outdoor soaking pools at this hot springs resort. Each pool was better than the last - some had waterfalls for you to close your eyes and relax under, others were infused with minerals like Iron and Soda. Most guests spend all day getting in and out of the pools at their leisure, and fill the other time with reading, napping and taking advantage of the other amenities.

The in-house spa has been rated one of the best travel spas in the world by Travel + Leisure (“World’s Best” in 2021) and is the epitome of rustic luxury. Another guest had just received the Rio Grande Hot Stone massage and said it was “divine”. The spa offers various massages with their signature hydrotherapy hot towel masks. You don’t need a spa pass to take advantage of the healing properties of mud; however - the mud pool (with basins to remove any mask you apply) is available to all guests with a resort pass. I loved this section and my skin left feeling silky smooth.

I found myself needing a little more activity after my soak and I could take a meandering walk through the cottonwood trees on the estate. Ojo is right next door to Bureau of Land Management land that is available for even more hiking or biking recreation. The grounds also feature a lovely restaurant, full garden and complimentary morning yoga classes for overnight guests. Their sister site in Santa Fe grows many of the dishes used in the restaurant on site.

The spa asks that guests observe primarily silence while on property, and refrain from taking pictures while at the resort. This adds to the calming atmosphere the resort maintains. The resort also expects that guests under 13 participate in dining and lodging only, not the pools.

Need to know

I recommend Ojo Caliente as a truly one-of-a-kind Southwest experience. Once you are done feeling relaxed and rejuvenated, you can continue the cultural experience in nearby Taos or Santa Fe. Connect with me to book a trip at a relaxing and adventurous Hot Springs Resort for your next vacation.
