The Best Places to Stay in Santorini, Greece: My Favorite Hotels in Fira and Oia

Curator’s statement
Santorini, a Greek island, is known for its unbelievable views, breathtaking sunsets and charming villages. Located in the Aegean Sea, Santorini's unique geography was shaped by a volcanic eruption over 3,000 years ago. This dramatic event created the iconic caldera, a crescent-shaped bay surrounded by towering cliffs, and it is one of the island's most distinguishing features.

The hotels on the caldera side are called cave hotels because they were once fishermen's homes, built into the steep mountainside to keep cool in the summer and stave off pesky pirates. These accommodations, once simple, are now luxurious, featuring whitewashed walls, arched doorways and vaulted ceilings. The interiors, while sparse, are beautifully decorated, but most importantly, they offer stunning panoramic views of the Aegean Sea (like all the best places to stay in Santorini). Located in prime positions within the caldera, these cave hotels provide easy access to Santorini's vibrant villages, stores, restaurants, and bars.
Santorini's geography encompasses Fira, the island's capital; Oia, renowned for its iconic blue-domed churches and stunning sunsets; further south, the beautiful village of Pyrgos; and lastly, Akrotiri, which showcases Santorini's archaeological treasures.
The following gems are my favorite places to stay in Fira and Oia.
1. Noūs Santorini: Perched atop the cliffs of Fira, Nous is minimalist and elegant, and several rooms have private terraces and pools. This hotel has a great spa and pool. The service is warm and personalized.
2. Adronis Hotels: This group has three gorgeous hotels in the enchanting village of Oia: Adronis Luxury Suites, Adronis Boutique Hotel and Adronis Arcadia. All three hotels are beautiful, with many room types that offer private plunge pools and epic views. Adronis Hotels are known for their impeccable service and exquisite dining options.
Katikies Kirini Santorini: Situated in Oia, Katikies, one of the best places to stay in Santorini, epitomizes elegance and refinement. Its meticulously designed cave-style accommodations have infinity pools overlooking the sea, indulgent spa services and unparalleled hospitality.
Canavas Oia Epitome: Nestled in the charming village of Oia, Canavas Oia Epitome offers serenity and privacy. Each suite features a private plunge pool, spacious living areas and unparalleled comfort.
Vedema: Located in the picturesque village of Megalochori, Vedema offers a hotel experience away from the bustling caldera side. This boutique hotel, set amidst vineyards and traditional Cycladic architecture, exudes a sense of peace and privacy.
Santorini is an extraordinary destination, perfect for a honeymoon or a special celebration for couples seeking an unforgettable experience. While these cave hotels are some of the best places to stay in Santorini for romantic getaways, it's important to note that children below 13 are not permitted in most hotels.
