Don’t Miss These Activities in Kyoto
Curator’s statement

We originally planned to go to Japan in May 2020, but Covid kept us away. We finally made it in May 2024, and we think every day about the magic of Kyoto. The temples and shrines, food and people are exceptional!

Where to stay in Kyoto

If you are traveling by train from Tokyo to Kyoto, it’s very easy to make a stop for 3-4 hours in Nara (about an hour by train from Kyoto). There, you will get to enjoy the amazing Nara bowing deer and the incredible Todaiji Great Buddha Temple.

Location is key for any stay in Kyoto. I highly recommend a hotel in the Gion district, with easy walking access to exceptional restaurants and sights. And, if you might be splurging on a hotel stay, there are amazing restaurants and activities in Kyoto that are surprisingly very affordable.

The Gion district can be quite busy during the day, so even if you are not staying in Gion, you will want to take a Night Tour of Gion, which includes Maruyama Park and Yasaka Shrine. You may even get to see the amazing Kyoto Geishas (Geikos).

A view of a traditional Japanese temple called Hōkan-ji Temple (Yasaka Pagoda) at night.

You definitely need to hike to the top of Fushimi Inari Shrine. If you can’t get there before 9 am, keep in mind that the Shrine never closes so it can be a cool evening activity. I recommend pairing a visit to the Shrine with a sake tasting tour. The water in Fushimi makes for some incredible sake!

By far, our favorite meal in Kyoto (and likely all of Asia) was at Teppan Tavern Tenamoya. You need to email the chefs/owners for a reservation exactly two weeks before you want to go. The food and the service are absolutely exceptional and for a very reasonable price.
