As the publisher of Hispanic Engineer magazine and a Fora Advisor, I recently had the privilege of leading a group of STEM professionals on an educational and exploratory journey to Panama. This trip was not only an opportunity to delve into Panama's rich tapestry of culture and history but also a chance to examine closely the engineering marvels that have significantly impacted global infrastructure and logistics.

Engineering Wonders of the Panama Canal

Our visit to the Panama Canal was a highlight of the trip. The canal, a cornerstone of modern engineering, showcases a complex interplay of mechanics and logistics that fascinate and inspire. As someone deeply involved in the engineering field, witnessing this marvel provided fresh insights and appreciation for the ingenuity and innovation that have driven such a monumental project. Our group engaged in detailed discussions about the impact of such engineering feats on global trade and the technical challenges overcome during its construction.

Cultural and Culinary Richness

Often referred to as the "Dubai of Central America," Panama City is a vibrant metropolis that blends modernity with a rich cultural heritage. The food scene in Panama is incredibly diverse, with influences from Latin America, the Caribbean and beyond. Each meal presented us with an opportunity to savor a wide array of flavors, reinforcing the idea that Panama’s culinary landscape is as diverse as its ecosystem. From traditional Panamanian dishes to more contemporary fusions, the quality and diversity are exceptional.

Accommodation and Amenities

Our stay at the JW Marriott in Panama City was nothing short of luxurious. The hotel offers a range of top-notch facilities, including diverse restaurants and bars, as well as ample leisure activities. The service was impeccable, providing a comfortable and enriching environment for our group to relax and discuss each day’s learnings and experiences.

Travel Tips for Future Visitors

One of the most useful services we utilized was the meet-and-greet service at the airport. This facilitated a smooth transition through immigration and customs, saving us time and hassle, especially valuable for ensuring a positive start and conclusion to our travels. I strongly recommend this service for anyone traveling in a professional or large group to streamline airport procedures.

Unique Destination Insights

Panama’s unique geographical and cultural position, a short flight from the United States, offers a distinct travel experience unlike any typical tourist destination influenced heavily by Western culture. It is a vibrant, self-sustaining country that prides itself on its unique identity and heritage, offering travelers a genuine taste of its rich culture and historical depth.

Our trip to Panama was an enriching blend of professional development, cultural immersion and culinary delights. The country offers a compelling mix of experiences suitable for professional groups and casual travelers alike, making it a highly recommended destination for those seeking a comprehensive travel experience that combines leisure with learning.
