A Journey Through the Ancient Ruins of Machu Picchu
Curator’s statement

In February 2024, my husband and I embarked on a journey to explore one of the world's most renowned wonders: Machu Picchu. Nestled amongst the beautiful peaks of the Andes, this ancient Inca citadel gave us long lasting memories. Machu Picchu truly lived up to its reputation, captivating us with its unique beauty.

Our first journey to South America led us to Peru, a land filled with beauty and uniqueness. Our adventure to Machu Picchu required a lot of planning due to its remote location. Accessible only by bus and train from Cusco, the journey took us on a scenic three-and-a-half-hour ride to Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu town.

Arriving a day ahead allowed us to explore the quaint town nestled in the Andean peaks. Despite its small size, Aguas Calientes welcomed us with English-speaking locals and a warm, friendly atmosphere. Our stay at the Tierra Viva Cusco Machu Picchu hotel offered comfort with clean rooms and helpful staff.

Opting out of the two and a half hour hike to the Citadel, we secured bus tickets for the following morning and coordinated with our tour guide for the meeting point. The next day, our 10 a.m. entrance ticket meant that we had to catch the 9 a.m. bus from the town center. The winding journey through the mountains lead us to one of the world's most awe-inspiring sites.

A road in a village surrounded by mountains

Guided by a knowledgeable tour guide, we learned the history and culture of the Incas, as well as their way of life and the purpose behind the citadel's construction. Standing inside the ruins, we were amazed by their advancements ahead of their time.

After spending around three hours exploring the Citadel, we returned to town via bus. With some time to spare before our train departure, we walked along the banks of the Urubamba River, soaking in the peacefulness of the surroundings.

Need to know

Visiting Machu Picchu is truly worth the journey despite its distance. To fully enjoy the experience, consider planning a two-day visit for a more relaxed exploration. Arriving in Aguas Calientes early in the afternoon allows ample time to discover the town's charm and to rest up for the adventure ahead the next day.
