Site Inspection at Alila Ventana Big Sur
Curator’s statement

In March of 2024, I did a site inspection while staying at Alila Ventana Big Sur with my husband. The staff were incredibly attentive, the views were impeccable and the spa was an unmatched experience.

The resort is located in Bis Sur, California in close proximity to other hotels (across from Post Ranch Inn and noteworthy restaurants such as Big Sur Bakery and Nepenthe). The property is expansive and the hotel offers golf cart shuttles for guests to move about more freely.

The grounds are breathtaking and all rooms were renovated in 2018.There are two heated pools plus a hot tub on property in addition to a Japanese bathhouse (where clothing is optional). The main pool scene has expansive views of the ocean and an outdoor pool bar. At the spa, there is an outdoor sauna (no steam room) but the treatment facilities which are primarily in outdoor cabanas, are exquisite and unique.

Dining or grabbing cocktails at the Sur House while watching the sunset over the Pacific Ocean was heavenly. This is a popular vacation spot for couples (especially on a babymoon) and arguably offers the best views in Big Sur.

Need to know

If you have the budget, I would recommend Ventana Big Sur (in spring - early fall due to weather only) but there are some things to keep in mind. The hotel is now all inclusive only (excluding alcohol) and in my honest opinion, the food is mediocre. If you are a foodie and place a high value on food quality, caliber while traveling and/or like to explore different restaurants while traveling, this hotel is likely not for you. However, if you prioritize ambiance, excellent hospitality, stunning grounds (with views) and/or just love Big Sur, I would absolutely recommend this property.

From spa time to ocean hikes, we found our time at the property incredibly relaxing in large part because we never left. If you love a boutique spa that offers intimate, unique spa experiences, you will love the spa at Ventana. We opted for a spa experience with a bath soak in a private cabana overlooking the redwoods and it was incredible. This was - no joke - the best massage of my life. The massage therapists are top-notch and will put you in a trance. We also really enjoyed hiking directly from the property with beautiful views of the ocean for miles.

I think for the exceptionally high prices, the food should be better but that is really the only downside of this resort. If you love being able to not spend a dime once on vacation (even tipping is included in the upfront rate!), this may be a perfect destination for you. If you travel to eat, I would suggest looking into non-inclusive options such as Post Ranch Inn so you have the option of exploring other restaurants in the area (you can even visit Ventana for cocktails at sunset on the Sur House terrace as a non-guest if you do this)!
