Best hiking trails in Oahu:
Mānoa Falls Trail (1.6 miles roundtrip, 610ft, easy): Beautiful rainforest trail ending at a 150-foot waterfall.
Tip: It can be muddy — wear proper shoes and bring insect repellent for mosquitoes.
Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail (2 miles roundtrip, 500ft, easy): Paved coastal trail leading to a scenic lighthouse overlooking the ocean.
Tip: There’s no shade — hike in the morning and apply sunscreen!
Diamond Head Summit Trail (1.6 miles roundtrip, 560ft, moderate): Iconic hike up a volcanic crater with panoramic views of Waikiki and Honolulu from the top.
Tip: Go early to beat the heat and crowds (reservations are now required for entry).
Lanikai Pillbox (Kaʻiwa Ridge) Trail (1.6 miles roundtrip, 613ft, moderate): Short, steep climb to two WWII-era pillboxes with breathtaking views of Lanikai Beach and the Mokulua Islands.
Tip: Best done early for cooler weather and a sunrise view — parking is limited in the nearby residential area or Kailua Beach Park.
Koko Crater Trail (Koko Head Stairs) (1.8 miles roundtrip, 1150ft, hard): A challenging climb up 1,048 railroad-tie steps straight up Koko Crater. The reward is a sweeping view of East Oahu and Hanauma Bay.
Tip: Bring plenty of water and take breaks — the incline is tough, but you’ll feel accomplished at the top!
Olomana “Three Peaks” Trail (4.4 miles roundtrip, 1550ft, very challenging): Thrilling ridge hike for experienced adventurers, with steep drop-offs and three narrow peaks to conquer. The panoramic views are definitely worth it.
Tip: Only attempt the second and third peaks if you’re an expert hiker with good weather — the first peak alone offers a great hike and view.
