Curator’s statement
Carmel-by-the-Sea is a charming destination that is full of design properties vying for attention, which makes selecting a place to stay not-so-straightforward. Luckily, Le Petit Pali came to the rescue as a trusted Fora partner, and when we stayed there last week, they proved that they're a hotel well-worth spending a night (or multiple nights) at. If you needed another reason to visit Carmel - here it is.

The Destination
Carmel-by-the-Sea is known as the gateway to the Carmel Valley wine-country and breathtaking Big Sur, and as a mecca for artists and art-lovers. The charming village has a genuinely intimate, small-town feel and there is no shortage of unique shops and restaurants. The tight-knit community of locals love their village and while visitors are welcomed, it is ensured that Carmel stays true to itself. Carmel love its dogs: according to the iconic Diggidy Dog Boutique, it's "the Number One Dog Friendliest Town in America." They even host an annual dog surfing contest!
Things-to-do in and around Carmel
The road to Carmel-by-the-Sea is a treat in itself and makes Carmel worth a visit. The 17-Mile Drive meanders through Pebble Beach and Pacific Grove and is scattered with beautiful properties and magnificent ocean views, with famous spots like the Lone Cypress. This driving tour is a great reminder of why California is often said to be the most beautiful US state. If you’re going in summer, make sure to check for major golf tournaments, which can affect your ability to do the 17-Mile Drive.
In town, there are many boutique shops and art galleries, alongside the fun Diggidy Dog Boutique, where you can shop for your pet or just for inspiration. The Cheese Shop also deserves a special mention - here, you can taste cheese samples or do a wine-tasting at a reasonable price (comes with cheese too). The shop is buzzing with activity and deserves its reputation for its welcoming staff and great cheese & wine.
Le Petit Pali
The village has been built on a hill that leads to a beautiful, white-sandy beach. Nestled at the top of the hill overlooking the town, is Le Petit Pali at Ocean Ave. There are two sister properties on Ocean Ave and 8th Ave, both with the same, bespoke design. If you're staying at one, you'll be welcome to look around at the other, which is a five-minute walk away.
At first glance, the property may come off as your regular motel - don't be fooled: once inside, you'll find lots of eccentric touches and elegantly designed spaces. The rooms each come with their own fireplace, a sleek bathroom, and an especially comfortable bed. Carmel's love of dogs extends to the hotel; aside from dog art, guests are welcome to bring their pets (there's an extra charge).
The resort fee covers many extras, such as foldable loungers that can easily be carried to the beach, beach towels, free parking, and concierge service. We loved the freshly baked cookies that were delivered to the room by the hotel staff, and felt right at home during the cozy 'Social Hour' in the main reception, which feels more like a living room with its comfortable seats and a fireplace. This room is also where a scrumptious breakfast is served in the morning, with fresh pastries and complimentary Mimosas.
The staff is friendly and attentive and makes sure guest needs are met. We had a wonderful trip and will be back - in the meantime, I recommend my clients book a stay here when in California. You won't regret it!
Need to know
I recommend Le Petit Pali for a romantic getaway or a fun family trip to Carmel-by-the-Sea. With its central location at the edge of town, everywhere is walkable, and the gorgeous beach is a stroll away. The property is warm, welcoming and comfortable. The fireplaces all over the property are especially nice in colder months or during chilly summer evenings.
