Retreat in One of Mexico’s Finest Hidden Gems
Curator’s statement

In late December of 2023, I took a personal trip to La Isla Holbox. This island is filled with lots of character, peace and the residents and hotel staff are so welcoming and attentive! Truly made the experience so wonderful that I highly recommend people to visit the island.

La Isla Holbox (hol-bosh), mayan for "Black-Hole" is so mystic and peaceful. When one comes to the island, it's to unwind and recharge the soul. The island is about a two-and-a-half hour ride by shuttle from Cancun's airport and then a quick 30-35 minute ferry ride. My best recommendation would be to book the shuttle and ferry rides in advance. Upon arrival, ATV taxi's welcome you to the island and then provide quick escorts to your hotel.

Once arrived at your hotel, it's best to get changed into your beach attire and head for the beach. Grab a cocktail, (personally recommend a mezcalita), and enjoy the sounds of the waves crashing onto the ever so soft sand. Following a quick "refresher," it's best to walk along the beach to Punta Mosquito and enjoy the serene view of the various hotels, restaurants and wildlife that bring a relaxing atmosphere to Holbox. As you continue to walk, be sure to walk along the sandbar and grab those amazing shots of the water. The water is such a lively blue/green that blends hormonally with the white sand. On occasion, you'll encounter the majestic flamingos taking flight over the immediate area, which are so breathtaking.

After strolling the beach, indulge in tequila tasting at Tequila O'Clock, to not only taste, but also learn from the maestro of the various tequilas and it's flavors. After a rich tasting, enjoy dinner at Piedra Santa Holbox for a culinary delight! Your palet will surely be glad you did!

Holbox is indeed a hidden gem in Mexico. So many activities to do from snorkeling, boating, kayaking and paddle boarding. You will get a sense of re-birth and will surely want to come back! The best times to visit the island are that in the late fall/winter months. Temperatures are an average between the low to mid 80s during the day and a refreshing lower 70s in the evening.

Snorkeling with the whale sharks is a must but is seasonal. The ideal time would be late spring to early September. In addition, to get the very best bioluminescence experience and maximum visibility, plan your Holbox vacation in the days surrounding the new moon in the summer and fall seasons.

Need to know

I recommend coming to the island on a honeymoon and or as a casual leisure trip!
