Glaciers, Gold and Joy: An Unforgettable Alaskan Adventure
Curator’s statement

This journey aboard the Norwegian Joy in August 2019 was more than just a cruise; it was a voyage into the heart of nature’s grandeur and humanity’s enduring spirit. From the moment we sailed out of Seattle, we were enveloped by the promise of exploration and discovery.

Alaska revealed itself as a land of contrasts: towering glaciers and serene waters, bustling ports and untouched wilderness. Each destination told its story — Juneau’s thrilling wildlife encounters, Skagway’s rich Gold Rush history and Ketchikan’s vibrant cultural heritage. Even the moments at sea, surrounded by the silence of Glacier Bay’s icy vistas, became profound experiences of reflection and awe.

The Norwegian Joy was our gateway to these adventures, blending modern comforts with opportunities to connect deeply with the environment. The ship itself became part of the narrative, a floating sanctuary offering both exhilaration and tranquility.

This trip was a celebration of Alaska’s rugged beauty, a testament to its allure for adventurers past and present and a reminder of the importance of preserving these breathtaking landscapes for future generations. Whether soaring above fjords or savoring local salmon, every moment was curated with a sense of wonder and discovery.

Let this journey inspire others to explore the Last Frontier and create their own stories amidst Alaska’s majestic beauty.

The Norwegian Joy, a mid-sized vessel with a capacity for over 3,800 passengers, provided a comfortable yet dynamic cruising experience. The ship’s decor blended elegance with a modern, relaxed vibe.

The Ship

Port highlights:

Juneau:

The ship docked in Alaska’s capital under clear skies. My shore excursion took me to the Mount Roberts Tramway, a unique attraction that provides both adventure and breathtaking views. Rising 1,800 feet above the cruise port, the tramway whisked us up Mount Roberts in a matter of minutes, offering panoramic vistas of the city, Gastineau Channel and the surrounding alpine wilderness. Afterwards we boarded a bus and went to visit Nugget Falls, an unforgettable experience of Alaska's raw, natural beauty. Located near the iconic Mendenhall Glacier, Nugget Falls is a stunning 377-foot waterfall that crashes dramatically into Mendenhall Lake, creating a misty spectacle.
The journey to the falls began with a leisurely and scenic 2-mile round-trip hike along the Nugget Falls Trail, starting at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center. The well-maintained trail was easy to navigate, making it accessible for most fitness levels. Along the way, I was surrounded by the serene beauty of Alaska's temperate rain-forest, with towering evergreens, vibrant mosses and the occasional glimpse of wildlife like bald eagles or black bears.

Skagway:

In Skagway, an already exciting day became unforgettable with a zip-lining adventure that combined adrenaline-pumping thrills with breathtaking scenery. Tucked away in the lush rain forest just outside town, this excursion offered the perfect way to experience Alaska’s rugged beauty from a whole new perspective — high above the forest floor. The town itself had a quaint charm, with wooden sidewalks and vintage-style storefronts.

Glacier Bay:

A day of scenic cruising revealed jaw-dropping views of tidewater glaciers and wildlife. Park rangers onboard provided fascinating commentary, enhancing the experience. Witnessing massive chunks of ice calve into the water was awe-inspiring.

Glacier Bay

Ketchikan:

Known as the "Salmon Capital of the World," is also a fantastic destination for whale-watching adventures. My excursion here was a highlight of the trip, offering a chance to witness the incredible marine life that thrives in Alaska’s pristine waters.
The adventure began with a short, scenic ride to the marina, where I boarded a comfortable, small-group vessel designed for wildlife viewing. The knowledgeable guides and captain were enthusiastic about sharing their expertise, setting the stage for a memorable experience. Equipped with large windows, open decks and warm indoor seating, the boat was perfect for spotting whales.

Boat Ride

Victoria, B.C.:

The final stop was Victoria, where I visited the famed Butchart Gardens. The illuminated gardens were magical, and the city's European charm provided a perfect end to the journey.

Dining and onboard Experience:

Dining aboard the Norwegian Joy offered diverse options, from specialty restaurants like Teppanyaki and Ocean Blue to casual spots like the Garden Café buffet. I particularly enjoyed the steaks and local Alaskan-inspired dishes.

Evening entertainment included Broadway-style shows, live music and comedy performances. The thermal suite in the Mandara Spa was the ultimate place to unwind after busy port days.
