The Alhambra: A palace like no other

You simply cannot visit Granada without seeing the Alhambra. This UNESCO-listed palace-fortress is a true architectural wonder. Built by the Moors in the 13th century, it’s filled with intricate tilework, grand courtyards and stunning gardens. The Nasrid Palaces are the highlight, with their delicate stucco details and the mesmerizing Court of the Lions. Don’t forget to visit the Generalife Gardens, where fountains and lush greenery create a peaceful escape.

Tip: Tickets sell out quickly, so book in advance! If you can, go for an early morning or evening visit when the light is magical.

Getting lost in the Albaicín

The Albaicín is Granada’s old Moorish quarter, a maze of whitewashed houses, narrow alleys and hidden courtyards. Walking through this neighborhood feels like stepping back in time. Climb up to the Mirador de San Nicolás, where you’ll find the most breathtaking view of the Alhambra with the Sierra Nevada mountains in the background. It’s especially magical at sunset!

As you wander through the Albaicín, stop by the small artisan shops and tea houses (teterías). You’ll find handmade ceramics, leather goods and colorful lamps — perfect souvenirs to take home!

Flamenco in the Caves of Sacromonte

Granada is one of the best places in Spain to experience authentic flamenco, and there’s no better spot than the cave houses of Sacromonte. These unique cave dwellings have been home to the city’s Gitano (Roma) community for centuries. Today, they host some of the most passionate and intimate flamenco shows.

Some great spots to catch a show:

  • Zambra María la Canastera: A historic, family-run venue with deep flamenco roots.

  • Cueva Los Tarantos: A lively show in a traditional cave setting.

Exploring Granada’s markets & streets

One of the best ways to soak in Granada’s unique culture is simply by walking through its streets. The Alcaicería (old silk market) is a great place to browse hand-painted ceramics, spices and Moorish-style lanterns. Nearby, Calle Calderería Nueva is lined with Moroccan-inspired shops and tea houses, where you can sip mint tea and enjoy delicious Arabic sweets.

Where to eat in Granada

Granada is famous for its free tapas — yes, you read that right! Order a drink at many bars, and you’ll get a complimentary plate of delicious food. Some top spots to try:

  • Bodegas Castañeda: A classic, lively tapas bar known for its jamón, cheeses and house vermouth.

  • Los Diamantes: Famous for its fried seafood — perfect with an ice-cold beer!

  • El Mercader: A cozy spot offering modern Spanish cuisine with a twist.

  • Tetería El Bañuelo: A relaxing tea house where you can try authentic Moorish teas and sweets.

Need to know
