Pre-Cruise Stay at the Fairmont Waterfront, Vancouver

Our Alaskan adventure began with a luxurious stay at the Fairmont Waterfront in Vancouver. This hotel is ideally located just across the street from the port, making it the perfect starting point for our journey. Princess Cruises added to the convenience by picking up our luggage directly from our room and delivering it to our cabin onboard the Grand Princess. It was such a hassle-free way to kick off our trip!

Embarkation and Departure

Embarkation from Vancouver to Anchorage on the Grand Princess was a breeze. With our check-in completed early through the app and our medallions pre-ordered, we sailed through the process. Booking the pre-cruise hotel package through Princess meant we didn't have to worry about our luggage at all.

Debarkation was just as smooth. We put our luggage out the night before, and it was waiting for us at the airport. We also booked a post-cruise airport transfer excursion, which included two scenic stops and a lunch break before dropping us off at the Anchorage airport. It was a perfect way to wrap up our journey.

Port Stops

  • Ketchikan: Our first stop was the charming town of Ketchikan, known for its vibrant culture and picturesque scenery. We explored local shops, marveled at the totem poles at Totem Bight State Park and enjoyed the lively Lumberjack Show.

  • Juneau: In Juneau, I ventured out on a solo hike, climbing about 3,000 feet in elevation in the span of three miles, which is not for the faint of heart. The trails were incredible, offering stunning vistas and a peaceful escape into nature, though I did have a close encounter with two bears and my life may or may not have flashed before my eyes… Next time, I plan to book a whale-watching excursion to experience Juneau's renowned marine life.

  • Skagway/Haines: Due to high winds, we missed Skagway and docked at Haines instead. Although we were (very) disappointed to miss the White Pass Scenic Rail and Yukon Explorer excursion, Haines offered its own charm. Two small shops, a small shop, a grocery store and even a hammer museum.

  • Glacier Bay: Glacier Bay was a trip highlight. The freezing, atmospheric environment, reminiscent of Antarctica, showcased majestic glaciers and lots of seagulls. The mesmerizing views from the ship made this an unforgettable experience. You can checkout blankets to use from one of the towel stations by the pools, to help with the cold and wind.

  • College Fjord: Our day at College Fjord was sunny and clear, perfect for enjoying the sight of ice floats and the beautiful surrounding scenery. Watching from our balcony felt like a scene from a postcard, and I enjoyed it more than the upper decks because it’s so much closer to the water.

  • Anchorage/Seward: The final leg brought us to Anchorage and Seward. We booked an airport transfer excursion that included a scenic cruise to Portage Glacier and a visit to an animal conservation center. Since it was the first sailing of the season on Portage Lake, we got to carve a path through the ice — an incredible experience and my trip's favorite!

Food and Dining

The food on the Grand Princess was okay, but nothing special. If you have food allergies, it's crucial to advocate for yourself. For those with allergies, I recommend asking for fresh food from the back at the buffet or opting for the main dining room where staff can better manage special dietary requests. Despite informing the staff, I was ill several times from gluten, which was disappointing and something that I typically don’t experience when traveling.

Making and changing dining reservations for dinner through the app was easy, and we enjoyed choosing between private or shared dining options. No reservations are needed for the main dining rooms for breakfast or lunch.

They do offer afternoon tea almost every day of the cruise, and the gluten-free scones were delightful!

Highlights

  • Portage Glacier: The excursion to Portage Glacier was particularly special as it was the first sailing of the season on Portage Lake. We had the unique opportunity to carve a path through the ice, which was an incredible and memorable experience.

  • Wildlife: We spotted a variety of wildlife throughout our journey, including otters and porpoises. Although whale sightings were rare, the binoculars we brought made all the difference in spotting these creatures. Be sure to use them to look at Mt. Juneau for mountain goats!

Tips and Recommendations

  • Plus Package: Worth the investment for bottled water delivery and tea/soda, plus it includes crew appreciation.

  • Bring Water Bottles: Rooms don’t come with water, so a refillable water bottle is a must if you like to stay hydrated and don’t want to generate a ton of plastic waste from bottled water.

  • Toiletries: The ship provides 2-in-1 shampoo, which isn't great. Bring your own conditioner, at least. The other toiletries and lotion were totally fine.

  • North to Alaska Programming: Informative and available in your stateroom, if you don’t want to go to the Princess Theater. Definitely check it out!

  • Our Ship: The Grand Princess is an older ship, and it shows, but it's clean. I would opt for newer ships whenever possible.

  • Airport Transfers: Look for a representative holding a small Princess sign after clearing customs to get your taxi voucher. It's easy to miss but straightforward once found.

  • Seasickness: The Pacific can be rough, so bring nausea patches just in case.

  • Tech Glitches: Expect occasional issues with the Princess app, so plan accordingly.

  • Tip the Guides: $2+ per person is appreciated for their service and knowledge.

  • Recommended reading: "The Alaska Cruise Companion" is an excellent book for in-depth regional insights that can enhance your trip.
