Discovering Borgo Egnazia: A July Getaway in Puglia
Curator’s statement

In July 2023, I had the pleasure of staying at Borgo Egnazia, a breathtaking resort in Italy’s Puglia region. From the moment I arrived, I felt transported to another time and place. The hotel is a carefully crafted blend of luxury and tradition inspired by the architecture and ambiance of a classic Puglian village. Designed with stone pathways, whitewashed walls and even a central piazza, Borgo Egnazia immediately felt like a true Italian retreat. It balances elegance and rustic charm against a scenic backdrop of olive groves and Adriatic views.

My suite was beautifully designed with understated elegance, integrating natural stone, muted tones and traditional accents that embraced Puglian aesthetics. Each room, villa and casetta in the resort seemed thoughtfully tailored to blend comfort with authenticity, offering the luxury of space and privacy. The layout encouraged exploration while keeping a sense of intimacy, allowing guests to feel part of a hidden village where every corner invites a story.

Dining was one of the highlights of my stay. At Due Camini, the Michelin-starred chef Domingo Schingaro curates menus that spotlight the flavors of Puglia, with ingredients sourced locally and dishes that stay true to the region’s culinary traditions. Fresh seafood, ripe vegetables and handmade pastas were staples. Each meal felt like a celebration of Puglia’s bounty. The atmosphere at each dining venue within the resort added to the experience, blending local decor with a warm, welcoming ambiance.

I spent a full afternoon unwinding at the Vair Spa, which offered treatments inspired by ancient Italian wellness practices. This wasn’t just about relaxation — the treatments were thoughtfully designed to restore balance, grounded in a philosophy that honors Italy’s holistic approach to wellness. It felt both restorative and culturally connected — a perfect extension of the resort’s ethos of integrating local traditions into every experience.

Beyond the walls of the resort, Borgo Egnazia offered excursions that immersed us in the local culture, including cooking classes, horseback riding along olive groves and guided visits to nearby towns. These experiences were a window into Puglia’s rich heritage and natural beauty, making it more than a resort but a gateway to exploring the region.

By no surprise, I learned that Borgo Egnazia recently received the “1 Key” distinction from the Michelin Guide. This is a new accolade honoring hotels that provide immersive, culturally rich experiences. It was easy to see why. Everything about Borgo Egnazia’s design, from its village-inspired architecture to its emphasis on local materials, resonates with the spirit of Puglia. The Michelin Key designation acknowledges the resort’s achievement in creating a world-class experience that feels deeply connected to its region.

Need to know

Staying at Borgo Egnazia felt like stepping into a world where luxury and tradition harmonize, offering guests the best of Italian culture within a refined, yet unpretentious setting. Its Michelin Key distinction is well-deserved, recognizing a destination that’s as culturally rich as it is comfortable. For anyone seeking a unique stay that marries elegance with authentic Italian charm, Borgo Egnazia is a place that delivers an unforgettable experience of Puglia.
