Our December trip to Rome was highlighted by our stay at the exceptional St. Regis Rome, a luxury hotel that epitomizes elegance and comfort. Located near the Piazza della Repubblica, the St. Regis Rome offers a prime location and breathtaking views, making it an ideal base for exploring the city's historic and cultural landmarks. The hotel masterfully blends modern and classical design elements, creating an inviting and sophisticated atmosphere. The 161 rooms and suites are meticulously decorated with sumptuous fabrics, Murano glass chandeliers and luxurious marble bathrooms, providing a sanctuary of comfort and style.

Rome in December transforms into a festive wonderland with beautiful Christmas lights and decorations adorning the city. The entire city, including the St. Regis Rome, is adorned with festive decorations, creating a magical and romantic atmosphere. Walking through the historic streets of Rome during this time, you'll encounter charming Christmas markets, particularly in Piazza Navona, where you can find unique gifts, artisanal crafts and delicious holiday treats. The cooler weather makes it perfect for exploring Rome's iconic landmarks like the Colosseum, Roman Forum and the Vatican Museums without the summer crowds.

Visiting Rome in December also offers a unique opportunity to experience the city’s rich cultural traditions during the holiday season. The Christmas Eve Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica is a deeply moving experience and many churches around the city host beautiful nativity scenes and holiday concerts. The blend of historical grandeur and festive cheer makes Rome an ideal destination for a winter holiday.

Dining and celebrations

Dining at the St. Regis Rome is a highlight of any stay. The hotel's restaurant, LUMEN Cocktails & Cuisine, offers an exquisite dining experience with a menu that combines traditional Italian flavors with modern culinary techniques. The elegant setting, complemented by the stunning decor and impeccable service, creates a memorable dining experience.

New Year’s Eve at the St. Regis Rome is an unforgettable experience. The hotel hosts a spectacular New Year's Eve soirée, featuring a gourmet dinner prepared by Michelin-starred chefs, live music and entertainment. As midnight approaches, guests gather on the hotel's rooftop terrace to enjoy a panoramic view of the fireworks over Rome, creating a magical and festive atmosphere to ring in the New Year. The staff’s exceptional service ensures that every detail is taken care of, allowing you to relax and enjoy the festivities.

Must-see attractions in December

Exploring Rome in December means fewer crowds and a more relaxed atmosphere. The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are must-see attractions, and visiting them during this time allows you to fully appreciate their grandeur without the hustle of peak tourist season. The Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica are also less crowded, and the Christmas decorations and nativity scenes add a special touch to your visit.

Don’t miss the Christmas markets, especially in Piazza Navona, which offer a festive shopping experience with unique gifts and holiday treats. The Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain are beautifully illuminated and less crowded, providing a perfect backdrop for holiday photos.

To fully experience the magic of Rome during the holiday season, I recommend an evening tour of the city. This will allow you to see the stunning Christmas lights and decorations without the daytime crowds. I can include stops at iconic landmarks like the Colosseum and St. Peter’s Basilica, beautifully illuminated against the night sky. This is a perfect way to capture the essence of Rome’s festive atmosphere and create lasting memories.
