Site Visit at Hospes Amerigo in Alicante, Spain
Curator’s statement

I had the opportunity to stay at Hotel Hospes Amerigo in November 2023. The property was built in the 16th century originally as a Dominican convent, thus the super high ceiling and you can still see the original gorgeous arched windows. The hotel was opened 20 years ago and had been the only five-star hotel in Alicante until this year. The hotel has gone through a complete renovation this year. I would definitely stay here again.

Where to stay

Rooms

  • All newly renovated, very high ceilings give the rooms a much bigger feel. They are very spacious with large bathrooms.

  • There are a total of 80 rooms with six sets of interconnecting rooms.

  • Fourth (top) floor has only five rooms, which is much more private but is only accessible by stairs from the third floor and all of them have sloped ceilings.

Facilities

  • Has a small, enclosed rooftop pool, where the top opens in the summer.

  • Spa is also on the top floor next to the pool.

  • On the same floor is also a small gym with cardio equipment and weights.

  • Roof top bar opens nightly during the summer and offers a perfect view of the Santa Barbara Castle.

  • Underground parking is available upon request. It’s almost impossible to find parking on the street, so if you have a rental car this is a great option.

Dining/Bar

  • Fondillon Restaurant is the hotel’s main restaurant, but was still under renovations while we visited, due to reopen in December of 2023.

  • There is a separate tapas bar, Fondillon Barra, for small bites or pre-dinner drinks.

  • And both of these share a gorgeous courtyard in the middle of the hotel, where they have live music with Flamenco every Thursday night year-round.

  • There is also live jazz brunch every Sunday year-round.

  • El Bistro de Amerigo is where breakfast is served.

Need to know

I would highly recommend Hotel Hospes Amerigo. The impeccable service, expansive rooms, and strategic location make it a perfect choice. Easily accessible on foot, it's close to restaurants, bars, the beach, the boardwalk, the central market, and other attractions.
