1. Astana: A Modern Marvel
Astana, the sleek and futuristic capital, which was renamed Nur-Sultan but has now returned to Astana, is a city that takes futuristic design that embraces its heritage to a new level. If you like places with surreal quirks you won't want to miss this city.
What to do
Visit the iconic Bayterek Tower, a symbol of Astana with spectacular views from the top.
Explore the Khan Shatyr Entertainment Center, a massive mall shaped like a nomadic tent made from transparent glass that houses shops, restaurants and the Sky Beach Club, where you can drink cocktails on lounge chairs perched on a man-made beach in tropical temperatures year-round - quite a surreal experience!
Don’t miss the Nur-Astana and Hazrat Sultan Mosques; both stunning examples of Islamic architecture.

2. Almaty: The Cultural Capital
Almaty, the former capital and largest city, is the beating heart of Kazakhstan’s culture and charm. Nestled at the foot of the Tian Shan mountains, this city offers a perfect mix of urban sophistication and natural beauty.

What to do
Take a ride on the Kok-Tobe cable car for stunning panoramic views of the city.
Wander through the lush Panfilov Park and visit the vibrant Zenkov Cathedral, a wooden masterpiece.
Stroll down Arbat Street for local art, souvenirs and some great people watching.
Hit the slopes or enjoy the stunning mountain views at Shymbulak Ski Resort, a short bus ride from the city. Have a drink at the bar 3,200 meters above sea level!

Visit the Green Bazaar, a bustling marketplace where you can sample local delicacies like kurt (a fermented cheese snack) and dried fruits.
Explore the Central State Museum to learn about Kazakhstan’s rich history and culture. It sits in front of the grandiose Republic Square.
Admire the Almaty Central Mosque, a striking architectural landmark known for its gold dome.
3. Charyn Canyon: Kazakhstan’s Grand Canyon
If you’re craving an outdoor adventure, Charyn Canyon is a must. Often called Kazakhstan’s Grand Canyon, this natural wonder is just a few hours’ drive from Almaty.

What to do
Hike through the Valley of Castles, where towering rock formations make you feel like you’ve stepped onto another planet.
Pack a picnic and enjoy it by the Charyn River, which cuts through the canyon.

4. Lake Kolsai: The Pearl of the Tian Shan
Lake Kolsai, often called the "Pearl of the Tian Shan," is an alpine lakes that is a dream for hikers and photographers alike.

What to do
Hike the trail that circles the lake for incredible views and a good workout. You may need to take your shoes off to wade through certain sections.
Rent a rowboat and enjoy the serene beauty of the first lake.
Bring a picnic to enjoy local flavors.

5. Lake Kaindy: The Submerged Forest
Prepare to be enchanted by Lake Kaindy, a surreal destination where a submerged forest rises out of turquoise waters.
What to do
Marvel at the eerie beauty of the sunken trees, which poke out of the water like natural sculptures.
Hike the nearby trails for breathtaking vistas of the surrounding mountains.
There are usually locals with horses for hire; you can take a short ride along the lakeside.

While Kazakhstan is home to incredible landscapes and fascinating cities, it's also a jewel to visit thanks to its welcoming people who are excited to share their country and culture. It's a very family-oriented society, so if you're visiting as a family your itinerary can easily be adapted to be child-friendly.
